Yeah....the industry is producing way more vehicles.....with way fewer workers. Best believe that in the not to distant future that thousands of more Ford assembly workers will lose their jobs. The industry is moving to tech workers and Engineers. The Detroit area should see a big growth in software developers and a different discipline of engineers.
Which are all encompassed under the "manufacturing industy" umbrella.
3,000 jobs? Big deal. California has been adding 29,000 new jobs per month on average over the last 10 years.
... and note that some of those new Ford jobs are for electric vehicles. See how adopting green energy creates jobs and is good for the economy?
It is a big deal , after the state lost 200,000 plus jobs the last decade . And they weren't low paying service type jobs either.
As far as your statement about green energy....all the layoffs that GM , Ford and Honda have done the last year has been a direct result of going green. It is good to see some coming back.
scarabchuck -- do you have a link to back up your assertion that all layoffs at GM, Ford and Honda were caused by going green? I'm very interested in knowing if that's true, thanks.

I'm also involved in the design / engineering side of this. I guess it is really the same thing as automation at the plant level. New technologies need new talent. This all costs money. I'm sure some of these jobs will return as progress moves forward. The companies are trying to stockpile as much cash as possible because it will be a huge loss in the beginning. I don't see a big push for autonomous at the moment and EV's are slowing gaining in popularity. Each company knows it can't be left behind though.
There are many other details that I really can't mention and it's too much to type, but there is a lot of stuff going on with the automotive OEM's preparing for this big push to EV/ autonomous.
Funny thing about GM, less than 20 years ago they released the EV1 , and many loved that car...yet GM pulled the plug and pretty much made it disappear. Wonder where they would have been now had they kept up development from that era.
General Motors will cut up to 14,000 workers in North America and put five plants up for possible closure as it abandons many of its car models and restructures to focus more on autonomous and electric vehicles
Both companies have said the cuts are needed because the companies face huge capital expenditures to update their current vehicles and develop them for the future.
General Motors, Daimler, Tesla, Honda, Fiat Chrysler and Audi have all announced job cuts since January, totaling some 38,000 workers, Bloomberg reports. This appears to be the tip of the iceberg with more layoffs to come.
Not really, right now the only way they get back in power is if there is bad news for the country and they've been doing everything they can to make that happen. They've been openly praying for a recession for years now. Every positive jobs report or economic forecast is yet another nail in their coffin.
Reminds of how Republicans acted during Obama years. Different President, same old bs. Politics as usual.

Electric vehicles are clean but what about the electric power generation for charging the batteries? Most all of the new "baseload" power generation in the USA is by way of gas turbines- internal combustion engines. They're closing nuclear power plants, which generate absolutely clean power, at an accelerating rate.
Indian Point 2 and Indian Point 3 nuclear power plants that currently generate most of the power for the NYC area will close in 2020 and 2021. Con Ed plans to replace that power with 3 new gas turbine plants. How does that help the planet?

Yeah....but there will be less assembly workers. Those jobs can be automated.
