If you look at the history of the impeachment process, majority of the cases it doesn't remove the President. Clinton was impeached but he still won re-election by a landslide.
I don't think Conservatives or independents complained as much as liberals did back then when the Senate failed to convict Bill Clinton. Which everybody knew he did it and lied on TV yet most Americans are ok with Bill using office staff for his personal pleasure.
Neither should have been impeached. Want to know the real difference between then and now? We conservatives back then were unbiased enough to realize it was not the appropriate use impeachment and objected to the politicians that pulled that stunt on our behalf. I, along with many of my fellow conservatives, voted our incumbent Republican representative out of office the next election for abusing the impeachment process.
Where are our modern counterparts?
And, there is an election coming up - let the people decide.

I would have thought the difference was that Clinton's moral failings only affected his personal/sex life while Trump's moral failings involved and affected issues concerning formal policy and national security.

That's certainly the bigger difference as far as I can see, as well.
Plus when you add in the fact that the initial investigation was over a real estate deal for Clinton but ended up with perjury, vs. the initial investigation being the abuse of power for Trump and that's where it stayed, that's another sizable difference, IMO.
