Corporate America drones don't have time to eat lunch out the way they used to. Companies with good paying jobs continue to do 'more with less" and the worker bees churn out their 60-70 hour weeks.

A lot of those restaurants survived longer than I thought they would. And since many serve alcohol stronger drunk driving enforcement over the decades has probably chipped away at their business. Throw in the usual like corporate downsizing, restructuring and competition of some kind I wouldn't be shocked. Several of those would need or thrived of the going out culture of the 1980s and 90s. Can't do that anymore wether it be cost or drunk driving.

The bottom link regarding restaurants seems to be stories from 2016 to 2017. Many are just closing under performing locations.

As far as retail locations, that is just a sign of the times. People are switching to online shopping. Many of us avoid malls like the plague, although, driving to While Foods took forever last night due to mall traffic.

Are basic retailers and restaurants hurting because most Americans simply do not have disposable income?
No, that is not the case. Do a bit of research.

The decline or retail outlets is nothing new, they are getting pummeled by Ebay, Amazon and other online sources. Most of those chain restaurants are built near those retail locations.

In my area, restaurants are opening like crazy.

Probably, left wing areas where the money run out, is where the closings take place.

Everything is anti reality now with the left. The weather isn't normal. The economy isn't good. Race relations aren't way better. Then they look at real problems and say they aren't real. Illegal immigration. A deep state run amok. Liberal cities being run into the ground. A society in decay from lack of values.

Restaurants have notoriously razor thin profit margins.

In NYC, the vast majority of businesses are restaurants and most last less than 3 years. Much of it is due to the skyrocketing cost of the lease to operate which ultimately absorbs the cost of doing business.

Case in point, try running a small restaurant in Manhattan when the rents 20k a month. Good luck with that.
