* Knocking out the culture that demoizes white men - that "cancels" (ie. personally and professionally destroys) anyone who disagrees with liberal orthodoxy - that encourages knee jerk accusations of racism, xenophobia or sexism - that encourages illegal immigration - that attempts to destroy the American economy in the name of climate change ("because we're all gonna die in like 12 years") while ignoring China and India - that demonizes and undermines law enforcement - that wants abortion up to the moment of birth - that is working hard to undermine (and eventually destroy) the first couple of Amendments - that puts illegals before American citizens. And on. And on some more.
Nowhere in that list is my concern that Trump is ".......basically a pig".
Not for nothin' but this issue is tiresome. Mostly because this issue has been discussed on this forum ad nauseam for the last 3 years. Can you say "Dead Horse"???
My not-asked-for-but-given-anyway advice to liberals on this site is to make your case for a change in the presidency. Make your sober and thoughtful case (given my priorities and given the current crop of presidential hopefuls that I watched in the PBS debate the other night).
Orange Man Bad - ya'll who voted for Trump are Nazis - how can women vote for such a pig tact is just not working. Frankly, you guys sound like a bunch of desperate, frothing, screeching, emotionally-charged nutjobs to people like me. So instead of asking ME how I could vote for such a pig, tell ME why I should vote for whoever the Democrat turns out to be.
Truth. Honestly I don't understand why liberals focus so much on the man's personal characteristics and so little on the things you've said. We conservatives are focused on the issues that are good for our country, not on whether we like him or not. We don't care about hurt "feelings". We care about providing a safe, secure, and free country with a growing economy to our children and grandchildren.
Real conservatives have come out against the Orange Obscenity.
They've been labeled RINOs by the "base" (right wing phony christians). Years ago, the GOP decided to cozy up to the religious fringe and now they're reaping the whirlwind. Now, to be considered a true Pub, one has to pass a purity test; kiss tRump's tush.
There's a reason it's referred to as "Cult 45."
The religious right now embraces him because his bigotry and gratuitous cruelty fits hand in glove with their angry irrationality. They've had hate radio and Fox News catering to their fear and resentment for the past couple of decades, reinforcing their spittle-spewing hatred of fellow Americans, who they see as enemies.
So, it should surprise no one that they reject reality in favor of whacky conspiracy theories when ordered to do so by the right wing media that constantly tells them that they're victims. Not victims of the predatory corporatism that's stripped their earnings and brought in millions of illegal workers, but victims of nebulous "liberals" who are out to get them.
Right wingers are compliant followers who will do as they're told.
It's scientifically proven. Of course they've been ordered to reject science. Education, as well.
Right-wing authoritarians are people who have a high degree of willingness to submit to authorities they perceive as established and legitimate, who adhere to societal conventions and norms, and who are hostile and punitive in their attitudes towards people who don't adhere to them. They value uniformity and are in favour of using group authority, including coercion, to achieve it.
Right-wing authoritarians want society and social interactions structured in ways that increase uniformity and minimize diversity. In order to achieve that, they tend to be in favour of social control, coercion, and the use of group authority to place constraints on the behaviours of people such as political dissidents and ethnic minorities. These constraints might include restrictions on immigration, limits on free speech and association and laws regulating moral behaviour. It is the willingness to support or take action that leads to increased social uniformity that makes right-wing authoritarianism more than just a personal distaste for difference. Right-wing authoritarianism is characterized by obedience to authority, moral absolutism, racial and ethnic prejudice, and intolerance and punitiveness towards dissidents and deviants.
They hold their noses to vote for him, but how much nose holding will they be able to do?
A lot. What does this tell you about the Democratic platform? At some point in time liberals need to focus on reforming their political message instead of blaming Trump for all their problems. Dems have some work to do.
I find it to be whimsical, and inconsistent, how the economy was supposedly poor under Obama, but great under Trump. If anything, there is continuity between the two. It's essentially the same slope, for example in unemployment trends, or the US stock market. Similarly, W's response to the Financial Crisis, and Obama's, were similar. The latter continued the former.
For any president, Democrat or Republican, it's a tenuous argument, to connect policy-choices with the economy's performance. One could argue that the Trump tax-cut boosted the economy. One could just as easily argue that the tariffs and trade-disputes stymied, the economy, so that it would have been even stronger, were it not for the headwinds and uncertainty of tariffs.
Returning to the discussion, what I think appeals to many conservatives about Trump, is that he's a vigorous and voluble opponent of the critics of conservatism itself. In other words, if I have coworker or neighbor who irritates me, who insults me and causes me trouble, and along comes some irascible character who gives this coworker or neighbor grief, well, whether or not this new character helps me directly, or appeals to me directly, I would find his presence to be welcome, because he offends those who offend me.
Conservatives say that they like smaller deficits. What has Trump done to help with this? Lower taxes and demand more spending on the military does what exactly to the budget? There are future deficits "baked into the cake" with demographics of age and social security and medicare....which aren't Trump's fault...but does he act to reduce these? No, Trump blows the deficits up larger during a supposed economic boom. What will happen to these deficits when we hit a recession?
Conservatives say that they like family values. Trump is on wife #3, has had affairs, has had severe allegations against him by women, has had affairs with porn stars, uses abusive language, insults half the country routinely, etc...
Conservatives say they want less welfare and less crony-capitalism. Have welfare rules been substantially changed? Have farmers not gotten bigger bailouts than ever.....are these bailouts a form of welfare or a form of crony-capitalism?
Conservatives cheered when Candidate Trump claimed that the FED policy under Obama created economic inequality and an economic bubble. Trump pointed out that the FED balance sheet went up trillions under Obama. Now Trump is demanding that the FED do the exact same things that he said created a bubble under Obama. He wants the FED to increase their balance sheet and push interest rates lower. Why would we need this economic stimulus if the economy was "the greatest ever?"
Conservatives cheered when Trump said that winning trade wars would be easy. How is that going?
Conservatives cheered when Trump said Mexico would pay for the wall. How is the wall going? Is Mexico paying for it?
Or packing the court by adding more seats to it, as some Democrats have proposed. My days of voting for a Democrat on the national level are probably forever over. Most conservatives I know do not like Trump and truly wish there was some way to duct tape his big mouth closed and/or render his fingers useless, but the alternative is unfortunately worse.
This is pretty much what I wanted to say. I don’t like Trump. I like the current batch of Democrats less. Given the choice between the two, last time I wrote in Rand Paul. This time, with the Democrats gone even further ‘round the bend, and due in large part to the three years of screeching, I’ll likely vote for Trump. Will have to wait and see what the next few months brings about, though.
It's not like we have anyone to vote for that is truly conservative. The Democrats would be worse in the areas you mentioned and so would most other Republicans. I like Trump mostly because of his personality and willingness to be combative and not polite to his adversaries.
Since no politicians Democrat or Republican have the stomach to cut spending, especially on welfare which is what I want cut more than anything else, I am rooting for an economic bubble pop and all the suffering that goes with it. We need a reset.
