Typically presidential debates for the general election are organized by The Commission on Presidential Debates. This group is made up of Democrat leftists and 'Never Trumpers'. Their conduct over the last 20+ years in producing presidential debates has established their reputation for bias and partisanship in no uncertain terms.
So President Trump has already given advance notice that he is considering not participating in the Commission's organized debates. Of course he does not have to if he does not want to. And with the sorts of events that they have produced over the last few decades, he would be stupid to go along with anything that these people recommend.
The president recently made it clear that he is giving serious consideration to skipping or recalibrating the 2020 general election presidential debates. He would be wise to follow his instincts.
For Republicans and conservatives, every debate hosted by the commission showcased clear-cut examples of bias against the Republican presidential or vice presidential candidates. The vast majority of the “nonpartisan” moderators and panelists for each debate were liberal journalists. Some were willing and eager to be more partisan and activist than others.
Take, for example, former CNN anchor Candy Crowley. Back on Oct. 16, 2012, during the debate between President Barack Obama and GOP nominee Mitt Romney, many Republicans believed she morphed from a pretend “nonpartisan” journalist into Obama’s personal, and very biased, protector right before their very eyes.

Just like the infamous Candy Crowley episode in 2012 during the debate between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama. Crowley was touted as a "moderate" and objective professional journalist leading up to that debate. For those of us who had followed here career, we knew that was nonsense. But Mitt Romney, Mr. deferential nice guy above all, went along - and got decked out cold during that debate - by the moderator Candy Crowley!
No more. It is time to either have a debate that is even handed to the Republican candidate, from the point of view of most Republicans, or forget about the debates altogether.
I expect that Trump will tell the Commission to that he will not participate in their debates, which is the right decision for him to make. He will also be willing to negotiate a mutually agreeable debate structure directly with the nominee for the Democrat's, whoever that is. But it will not be on a slanted playing field advantaging the Democrats this time.
I like your idea! I would just do a series of Q & A's with a handpicked panel. Maybe all ex-Presidents? Or, maybe Conservative women, minorities (Candace Owen #1 pick), and 1 millenial, 1 Gen X'er. No rich old white guys. I'm a rich old White guy, and I'm ready to hear from others.
Maybe even add Tulsi Gabbard. Juan Williams. Alveda King. Mia Love? (past time to mend that fence Donald).
Trump Must Skip Presidential Debates, Create His Own
An honest debate with anyone would expose him as the fraud he is, Trump knows it and he's afraid.

Very interesting. It illustrates both Trump's essential cowardice and his shrewd cunning in sometimes realizing he's incapable of coming out well in comparison with others.

Excellent plan for Trump to skip these debates. Last time, debate # 1 for the R nomination had a rigged - against - him question regarding his name calling of women (not that I am condoning the name calling - but question 1 in debate like this was not fair).
If they can negotiate something, great. Otherwise - no debates.
