I've seen ads for available dorms on Craigslist. An acquaintance suggested that I consider moving into one of these 'communes' for creatives, as I am a screenwriter. I decided against it, however, being that I'm in a relationship and we've got 4 pets. If I were single and pet free, I'd probably contemplate that sort of lifestyle more seriously.
To each his own. Some people thrive in an environment like that. Personally I like a LOT of distance between me and other people since I am a misanthrope. It would kill me to live in that kind of place.
To each their own. Those are some crazy prices for just a private room and a bathroom. We just bought a 1800sq ft house on 2 acres and it will cost us less a month than that.
Sounds like a pragmatic response to changing socioeconomic conditions. Quite normal and functional.
There are also some senior communities in my county operating under a similar concept (e.g. communal kitchens and bathrooms), and there are probably others throughout the country.
Not for everybody, to be sure, but that's why we have a price-driven free market economy: to generate, allocate and shift resources relatively quickly into myriad different projects all at the same time according to demand, opportunity, and ability to come up with innovative solutions.

It's all good!
I'm laughing at two things:
1. Insane rent prices.
2. The fact that these people are dumb enough to allow others to profit off a roommate situation.
I can't wait until these people learn they can stop paying rent and get several months of free living while the eviction process slowly grinds away.
