So the headline says it all.

With the billions of dollars that flow through drug cartels why dont they develop a modern military to ensure that they cant be arrested or "hunted down". IF a cartel had weapons production capabilities and modern weapons and miltiary they could expand market share and go head to head with govts.

They may even have the money to develop nuclear weapons and leverage nuclear blackmail that would ensure non arrest.

with as much money as they have why would they remain rag tag (compared to a modern military like the USA). They dont need nuke subs or carriers just a modern army and air power which cuts out alot of costs.

Because that would draw far too much attention and it would lead to someone like the US coming in and destroying them entirely.

Yeah with a modern military that could threaten the US, you'd be waking up a sleeping giant.

Oh boy. Hello they have investors. Hedge fund investors to be precise. They protect their turf grow and distribute. They use as little overhead as possible. Btw most workers have been kidnapped, threatened, maimed - drugged and so forth, they are not an army, they are modern day slaves to keep the addicted happy.

Because militaries are and always have been, tied to their ability to provide logistics for troops in the field. As soon as cartels set up static production facilities and warehouses, they would be attacked. Because they can’t set up area do denial weapons like AA or large scale troop deployments they can’t do it.

Think about that for a minute, these cartels ship drugs into EVERY CITY IN THE US, (and on a CONSISTENT basis), and it ALL has to fly beneath the radar of law enforcement, border control, etc...I think they are VERY skilled at logistics!!! Probably MUCH MUCH better than UPS, DHL, even, lets see any of these companies try do move packages around, while having to avoid detection by police, how long would they last?

As far as the OPs question...the cartels do not need an army, they are doing quite well for themselves as is right now!

As long as they have the US DEA as their lobbyist and enforcers in the states, (to make sure drugs remain illegal and no major competition comes along), they will continue to thrive and grow.

Cartels simply don’t have enough money.

And if they did, who’s going to provide them military equipment? Cartels can’t buy Lockheed Martin F35 fighters, or ask Boeing for Apache attack helicopters, or tanks from General Dynamics, not to mention missiles, training, fuel, maintenance, etc.

Such a silly question lol. Some of the richest countries won’t even spend that much.

Yep. Buying them is one thing, but operating, and maintaining them is even more expensive. A lot more. Why would they want to fight a conventional war anyway? They are doing just fine doing what they are doing, and the U.S. war on drugs is a huge waste of taxpayer dollars, and only exists to grow government and make it more powerful.

Cartels are logistic marvels, did you know they use Narcosubs to import large quantities of their products to Mexico? Up to 8 tons can be carried this way.

Pertinent for two reasons firstly its innovative to avoid detection, secondly they have the ability to procures materials and tools to build them (like carbon fiber, kevlar, batteries, etc.) without national intelligence services discovering it. That's no small feat.

This also demonstrates a second issue with your post. You can't build a 100' long sub without stationary production facilities, with limited available locations (has to be on a waterway), and they have means to keep it secret.

The reason they don't have 'militaries' is from the definition we commonly use. In essence they have militaries, both as members of the cartels, paramilitary wings, and mercenary companies. They're just tailored to their specific needs. Mostly man portable weapons and light armoured vehicles. You can hardly say they don't when they regularly go up against various National military unit, not always losing, and frequently delaying long enough to recover much of their necessary equipment and merchandise, victory is determined by objectives being achieved, and recovery of your stuff during an assault may be the objective.
