Most Jewish people are secular- non religious. There are small synagogs ascribing to Conservative, Reform and Reconstructive Judaism that are very welcoming to everyone including the LGBTQ community.
It’s rather bizarre that a local school official would choose to publicly express his personal views about religious Jews in Lakewood Township, NJ, an hour + to the South and Jersey City.
Lakewood was and remains a substantially white community. It is also home to the second largest yeshiva in the world. The character and politics of this township has undergone substantial change over the past 20 years whereby long times residents tend to resent the ongoing influx of Orthodox Jews from NY who have attempted to impose their culture and religious laws on the community. The community is still reeling from the massive welfare fraud that happened within the Orthodox community.
Reportedly, Lakewood, NJ has the highest fertility rate in the world. Most Orthodox attend gender segregated religious schools while the school district picks up the enormous tab for buses. Funding for public schools has been cut.
Serious court battles have been fought within condo/ townhome communities when a majority have imposed gender segregation rules in parks and pools.
The influx of Orthodox Jews is happening in Toms River and Jackson Township, too.
The mass shooting in Jersey City happened in the Greenwood neighborhood, a predominately black community. Younger Satmar Orthodox families, priced out of Brooklyn have targeted this neighborhood for resettlement because housing is very affordable compared to Brooklyn. This demand however has caused market values and rents to rise without the new businesses that typically accompany gentrification.
Generally speaking, Satmar Orthodox Jewish people are not a particularly welcoming community beyond those who observe 600 + strict Satmar Jewish laws concerning every aspect of their lives.
The irony is that the long time black Greenwood community is not welcoming to a group of people who isolate and shun those outside of their unique community.
Similar challenges and conflicts are happening in predominately white Rockland and Orange Counties, in NY. Most anti- Judaism hate crimes in the US are perpetuated by white people. The Rockland County GOP released an anti- Judaism video last year in reaction to the changes happening in many communities. Most anti- Judaism hate crimes in NYC are perpetuated by black people on the most conservative religious Jewish dynasties, not the general Jewish population.
Some people are really into identity politics , race, religion, gender, orientation, political ideology, etc. Criticize one Fill in the Blank is a criticism of all Fill in the Blank. It’s a self- perpetuating cycle of hate, especially in a Political Pandering Season of an election year.
Some seem a tad challenged to differentiate between one and few and several and many and most and all.
It tends to say more about them than their targets.
