Boomers retiring and moving to Fl / Arizona and Mexico in droves. The problem is they bring their ideology and also political stance. Mexico they bring big dollars and it’s hurting at least the housing prices. When they all die, probably many if those homes will stay in ruins.
More people move from NY because it is the most populous cold state. More people means more people moving in and out. Especially upstate NY. Its not like people are flooding into Alaska because it is a red state with lower taxes. Alaska faces the same problem as Kansas and West Virginia.

Yes, Colorado, Idaho and Montana - all cold states are growing at record numbers. All also happen to be tax friendly.

The weather is a factor, but not that big a one. When I was growing up, NY was the most populous state in the nation. It had even then managed to destroy a lot of businesses with their insane taxes and regulations (we're talking the 1970s). The are now, IIRC down to number 5 (after Florida going memory) and going downhill. WNY cities have downtowns with half the storefronts boarded up. Mile after mile of rusted, abandoned factories and warehouses. Run down roads and streets. But they manage to have some of the highest paid (and most overstaffed) public employees in the nation.
Upstate NY has a lot going for it-the Finger Lakes, Great Lakes, Adirondacks and Catskills, etc. But none of that is enough to make up for the stupidity coming out of Albany (NYC). Taxes, regulations, civil rights restrictions (esp regarding the 2A). People need to get out of NY and see the rest of the nation and learn that $15K a year in property taxes, along with crappy roads and poor schools, insane regulations and a "nanny state" mentality are NOT normal! As far as weather-I am in Idaho-and we have the highest rate of in-migration in the country (and have been in the top 5 or so for a couple decades). Guess what? Our weather isn't that much different than NY. New York isn't losing population over the weather (as a major factor anyway). They are losing it because Albany has made the state unlivable. In case you didn't notice-CA has similar problems with out-migration. Snow is not a major factor there. Both states would look even worse regarding population loss if it weren't for law abiding citizens being replaced with criminals.
New York is going the way of California. If New Yorkers do not like how their state is in decline, it is time to elect non-Democratic Party members to offices.
No. In state and local elections, don't elect anyone supported by police or teacher unions, regardless of party. Whoever gets public unions endorsement is getting it because they will line the unions pockets. Historically that has been both parties. Occasionally the GOP goes against the teachers unions but is always loyal to the cops, because, well, they tend towards authoritarian. Make no mistake, they are about fleecing the taxpayer for the gain of a handful of groups, not redistributing wealth to poor people.
For instance, here in Suffolk County, the CE was elected with PBA support. He said that he made a "historic deal" for the taxpayers a few years back. What he did was give current already overpaid cops a huge raise, and lowered the starting salary and progressive increases for new hires. Very heroic of him and the current cops to "kill the unborn", so to speak. At the same time as installing red light cameras everywhere that ticket granny for a right on red not stopping for a full 2 seconds.

Many parts of up state NY are economically depressed as are many small cities and rural areas throughout the US, this is not due to some particular action by the government. NY state always had above average real estate taxes, its not as if three was a sudden shift. People move because of employment and retirement.
Many of these states that experiencing growth will also see tax increases but there are many rural areas and small cities with an aging population that is being depleted. I see some states like Vermont offering cash incentives for relocation. Its alright for you to hate NY but stop making up reasons for people departing.
NY sucks. It's a total poopfest.
Nothing good about it aside from some natural beauty upstate, which is pretty much useless with their communist government. It's a shame really.

It's as much about taxes (everywhere) and lack of jobs (upstate) as cold weather. People making big money on wall st and all it's apparatus, big media, etc, and then your highly paid civil servants, aren't going anywhere. At least, not until they retire. I've had 4 houses flip on my block of 60+ers heading south in 4 years. But they flipped in a month to : cops, teachers, and drs at the nearby University Hospital. Nothing in my neighborhood lasts more than 2 months on MLS. But that's Long Island, not Buffalo.
