Most people leave NY because of cost of living. That cost of living is the result of 1) High taxes...state income tax, and property tax. A big chunk of taxes are driven by cops and teachers salaries. Where I live, teachers are overcompensated and cops wildly overcompensated relative to the demand for their jobs and the skills an education required for them. 2) very expensive real estate in areas where there are good paying jobs.

The problems in New York about those on the "inside" making big money of tax payer subsidy, and those on the outside having to pay for it. This is not left wing ideology, it's basically corruption under the guise of being pro union. The only unions left are public sector unions whose employers are constituents held hostage by taxes.

I'm sure we have a heftier welfare situation than other states, but when a beat cop can make approaching $200K with a High School Diploma in addition to free pension and healthcare for life while a Physicians assistant makes $100K..that's where the problem lies. Why would the PA, a skilled worker, stay here?
yeah, high CoL due to big govt is a right wing issue too, you know that right?

Many of these states that experiencing growth will also see tax increases but there are many rural areas and small cities with an aging population that is being depleted. I see some states like Vermont offering cash incentives for relocation. Its alright for you to hate NY but stop making up reasons for people departing.
there's high property taxes, and then there's high, constantly increasing property taxes.

Florida probably has more people from NY & NJ.
Many are liberal and Jewish, all concentrating in the southern end (Miami, Broward and Palm Beach). If not for the moderate to conservative Cubans in Miami, all of south Florida would be Democrat. It has helped turn an otherwise red state purple in national elections.

So yes they flee the mess the politicians (they voted for) have made with high taxes, high crime, and urban hellholes.
Yet they repeat the same liberal/leftist voting in their new location.

Make no mistake, they are about fleecing the taxpayer for the gain of a handful of groups, not redistributing wealth to poor people.

For instance, here in Suffolk County, the CE was elected with PBA support. He said that he made a "historic deal" for the taxpayers a few years back. What he did was give current already overpaid cops a huge raise, and lowered the starting salary and progressive increases for new hires. Very heroic of him and the current cops to "kill the unborn", so to speak. At the same time as installing red light cameras everywhere that ticket granny for a right on red not stopping for a full 2 seconds.
Suffolk County Cops, aren’t they paid the highest around? In addition, some of the small town Police forces in LI highly paid?

We are moving from metro Denver, and the reason we didn't consider any part of New York for our retirement was because of New York City. We also didn't consider Massachusetts or Vermont either because of the way those states are going.

"White flight" has turned into "Middle class conservative" flight, I think. (And we just lean conservative, btw.)

All cops on LI are highly paid, just some more than others.

The Sheriffs are actually making a realistic salary.

Quick story:

Former CE Levy replaced some highway patrol cops from SCPD with Sheriffs.

The DA (very tight with former Commissioner Burke now in jail) investigated Levy's wife and drove him out of office as retribution.

The myth is: you pay cops well, you get more professional cops. The truth: you pay cops more but don't increase oversight or stop nepotism, their arrogance grows and they wield even more power to use corruptly. Read all about it if you dare

Bellone, a Democrat, is fully supported by the SCPBA.

No, but it isn't a "socialist redistribution from the rich to the poor" issue either. It's simply an insider game of corruption, kinda like how Chicago has been run historically. And again, that approach goes across both parties in NY, it's just that Dems have more often been in power.

It is not ideological, it's simply about greasing palms.

Good luck getting in. Thousands take the test for few spots, and then they have internal gate keepers to make sure nepotism stays in place. Guy in below story was a cops son. Guy was drinking with other cops the night in question, and then after killing a guy, a bunch of cops show up to his hearing and harass and intimidate Newsday reports. Lovely people. Basically in many aspects they are a gang with government sanction. Not all, but too many.
