Bernie Sanders announced Thursday he'd raised $34.5 million in the fourth quarter, with Pete Buttigieg taking in nearly $25 million. But their resources are dwarfed by Michael Bloomberg, who's spending $36 million on TV ads this week alone.
Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced his run for president the last week of November. Barely five weeks later, he has already shattered records for campaign spending, pouring more than 155 million dollars into a nationwide advertising blitz.
Bloomberg's Democratic opponents are currently focused on early states like Iowa, which holds its primary caucuses a month from Friday. But Bloomberg is looking past the early contests, advertising in delegate-rich states like California, Texas, Florida and even New York. He's even announced plans to open a field office in the U.S. Virgin Islands. And he's opening a new campaign headquarters in Times Square, where an estimated 300 campaign staffers will work in an open office layout, like he used at City Hall.
I have seen 3 or 4 of his campaign ads and they are slick and well done. If there is anyone that can appeal to moderate democratic voters and take them away from Biden I say it will Bloomberg. Look how fast he is growing in the polls. Bloomberg also has been a member of both of the pathetic parties and could appeal to [R] voters in the general.
But if Bloomberg does well and steals enough moderate votes from Biden but does not win the nomination the Democrats will be stuck with Bernie or Warren.
His bigger effect was to throw over $100 million at Congressional races in 2018 that saw most of his aspirants win in districts where Trump won. Those voters are doubtless having second thoughts now.
I have an idea for a movie about an independently wealthy person who wants to light his money on fire. He takes a look at an upcoming election and decides that "None of the above" is a good slogan, and throws his hat in the ring.
You could call it "Bloomberg's Millions" or something like that.
Buy..Buy..Buy that nomination. This has to be going over real well with the current crop of "Eat the Rich" Democrat candidates.
