Part of me wonders if management asked him to give that speech. I can't imagine his opening monologue being unscripted, or not approved by some higher ups.
Haven't those award shows viewer numbers been dropping for a while now.
A) Ricky Gervais is the proverbial honey badger. He doesn’t care.
B) He’s already announced, long before the event, that this would be his last time hosting.
C) He nailed it and made the Hollywood elite squirm in the process. Props to him.
