This defies logic. They're all living in the same climate in Portland. There is no need for some in Portland to pay a "climate justice" tax to redistribute among others also in Portland. /smh
"The poorest parts of Portland are often hit hardest by environmental calamity—like the smoke and ash that covered the city during the Columbia River Gorge wildfire in 2017. The new tax aims to counteract that burden"
that bad smoke and ash specifically targeted the poor areas, leaving rich areas untouched?
that's quite a trick.

They'll be ecstatic here if Wal-Mart just leaves and it reverts to smaller mom and pops that would be exempt. Which means "keeping it local" and "buying American" more.
While I get your point, why don't Portlandians (or whatever) just shop at the smaller mom and pops already? Seems they're voting with their wallets or Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot, etc., would have already failed in Portland.

Many do. Much more such independent businesses here than I've seen in other cities.
The money will likely slowly decrease as marginal stores are quietly closed. No fanfare. No tantrums. Just QUIETLY closed. The profitable stores with the tax will remain.

So... where's the problem?
