Not sure how old you are, but it was quite commonplace for "the paddle" to be used 30 or so years ago.

Well there is a few easy solutions to this. One, call the kids parents, and have them come get him, Two, just call the police on the kid. Or Three, supply the teacher with a tazer. Either one eliminates the teachers from having to touch the students and it de escalates the situation.

A teacher using a taser is just asking for trouble - so knock that off your list. Things have gone way too far with this coddling. I don't know when this will end as the vast number of commenters here, on Facebook and on yahoo don't see anything wrong with what that teacher did so that he could teach the rest of the class without disruptions. I'd press charges on the kid for slapping my hand - two can play this game.

The not-so-shocking part is how this one is getting ginned up by the "media" like it's some big deal we should all care about, because of what color the teacher is of course.

I'm in my early 30s. I heard spanking is still applicable in some Mississippi schools today.

That kid being ejected from a classroom for playing loud music, slapping the teacher's hand when the teacher turned the music down, then called the teacher a racial slur. Sounds like there are more problems than a teacher ejecting a student. Sounds like the kid would be disruptive and unruly OUTSIDE of the classroom. First of all, students aren't suppose to play music in class in the first place. The teacher could have called the principal over that. However, turning off the music didn't hurt either. It is obvious this student felt entitled to play loud music in class, as if the rules didn't apply to him. It's obvious said student has some other problems.

No matter how justified your actions may be its never a good idea to loose your cool and act aggressively towards children. Ever.

I have long though that I could never function as a teacher.
