Amazing, how back in the 1940s and 1950s. Men looked very masculine, chisled and healthy. Women looked very feminine and very young in comparison to today.
I notice in many liberal cities there are lots of young people who have Rhinophyma from the tremendous amounts of wine, beer and liquor they drink. When I was Provo/Orem people have traditional noses of generations ago, but in cities where excessive wine, hard liquor and drug consumption is the norm there is a tremendous amount of young adults who have what looks to be Rhinophyma.
There are still many decent traditional looking people when I go to parts of rural America. Fargo, Lincoln, Kearney, Laramie people still look like models very similar to average person in the 1940s.
In bigger cities though, it is amazing to be on a Subway or train and notice how something has changed and many of the women look very, very masculine with shockingly big facial features. The men look very soft and feminine.
In small towns up north many men are 6 foot or more, while in cities like LA, Denver, San Diego the average man is about half a foot shorter.
In the US Army during WWII, logs were kept by the Quartermaster Corps of what sizes of clothes were issued for supply purposes, as well as by the Medical Corps for statistical purposes. It was found that the average male inductee was 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighed 144 pounds; an inch taller and eight pounds heavier than his Great War counterpart. He had a 33 1/4" chest measurement and 31" waist measurement; he could expect to add an inch to his chest and gain anywhere from five to twenty pounds during training. Many inductees were underweight due to insufficient nutrition as they grew up during the Great Depression.
From the tariff tables showing the frequency of size issues it is found that the sizes most frequently issued are a 7 to 7 1/2 hat, number 9 gloves, a 15 shirt with a 33" sleeve, a 36 regular jacket, a pair of trousers with a 32" waist and a 32" leg length, size 11 socks, and size 9-D shoes.

I went in the navy in 1963. I was a little younger than most, and I weighed in at 155/ 5'11'. I could do 53 pushups in one minute.
There was no such thing as fast food. No one ever ate after supper was finished.
It's not just Americans, though. World wide, people are living pretty unhealthy lives. It will probably not get better.
I went to a barn dance one time, in a place called Strawn, TX. The young men had the chiseled look that the OP refers to and there was not a gym within 75 miles.

There certainly was such a thing as fast food in my town in 1963 and surely in a bunch of other towns as well. I fondly remember my mom occasionally giving me the money to walk to the Dairy Kitchen to get us hamburgers and fries for dinner. They were good.

Well, WC Fields and Jimmy Durante would be proud...
Ironic that conservatives are complaining about this yet at the same time, vehemently oppose any regulations to promote healthier school lunches and healthy eating. Conservatives oppose dense, walkable urban living (which promotes exercise) in favor of gas guzzlers and sedentary lifestyles. Also ironic that it's the deepest red states that suffer from the worst obesity epidemic.
Republicans are so awesome at blaming Democrats for the problems that they themselves have caused.
