No screening @ US airports is now necessary (except perhaps out of an excess of caution). China has quarantined Wuhan & adjacent cities where the outbreak has been detected. No one leaves, for the duration.
Really ? There's enough law enforcement to make sure that 20 million people stay in place ?

This was as of last night - Weds. 01/22, about 10:00pm MST, US. 17 dead, hundreds infected (that's assuming that all the cases have been properly identified & reported).
Of course it has! China did the right thing. The USA couldn't seem to care less. It's a virus that has no vaccine. We should be erring on the side of caution rather than PC stupidity.

The US has no authority over China and its regulations.
My point was that there are US people who want to eliminate all Federal and State regulations, including FDA.
I am not one of them.

How dare the government ban the hanging of wild meats in outdoor stalls in the US.

yeah exactly. Plus, many people have already traveled to other places before the quarantine. They can still travel by car. (even now)

This said, at least the quarantine is a good policy, better than nothing.

I know. It’s impossible. How many are going to hop a connecting flight to Shanghai or Beijing and board an international flight to somewhere?

Many of these diseases (like SARS) can be prevented, all they have to do is to stop eating these live exotic animals. The live animal markets is to blame. Demonizing other countries is not the answer. Chinese government and Chinese people should face the problem and stop denying there is a problem.
China's meat situation has been worsened by the outbreak of a swine virus (last year?), which caused them to slaughter a lot of their hogs, to try to contain the virus. Their imports of pork & other substitutes have gone through the roof.

So they're not likely to cut into their meat protein market, no matter that it's likely the transmission vector for this latest outbreak.

We should put tariffs on the pork!

Default Push comes to shove

This is China. Reports say that the police are blocking all surface traffic, & I'm sure bus stations, rail stations, ferries, & etc. are all also closed & locked down. It being China, the police are likely armed & will shoot to kill anyone who tries to run the blockade.

If that fails, then the Chinese military will be called out - with their personal weapons, sidearms, crew-served weapons, APCs, trucks, & so on. Flamethrowers might actually be effective (@ containing the virus) in this case. The Chinese government is perfectly willing to shoot to enforce discipline.

No one's ever tried to quarantine a city of 11 million (Wuhan). We'll see how it works out.
