A French tennis player was blasted on social media this week after he was reprimanded by an umpire during a qualifying match at the Australian Open for asking a ball girl to peel a banana for him.
I honestly do not know what the fuss was about. Big deal.
But, then, I am a senior who started working in the 70's when it was no big deal for execs to expect their secretaries to bring them coffee and do other "not in my job description" kind of things. The worst was when my boss asked me clean a bird cage. He had brought the bird to his office for some reason that I now forget, but I told him that I didn't know how to clean a bird cage and didn't want to learn. He gave me a "you've got to be kidding" look, but accepted it, and I'm not sure if he cleaned the cage himself or what. (Actually, the details were slightly different, but if I gave all the exact details of the incident, it would take a very long time.)
The kids working tennis matches do all kinds of "servant" type jobs for the players - hand them towels, hold umbrellas, etc. In that context it seems pretty strange that people would see a request for banana peeling as out of line.
Peel this banana and eat it without chewing. Oh, and don't break eye contact.
