It is common for me to not recognize people I have met and had conversations with. It happens to me all the time, actually. My wife is always complaining about that because she remembers everyone, and it is often awkward when I introduce myself to someone I have had conversations with in the past. Trump meets a lot more people than me, so it is entirely possible he doesn’t remember the guy.
It is unfathomable that he could not just pose for photo ops with Parnas, but also dine with him and talk about State Department affairs with him, without knowing who he is.
2) Piggybacking on the first point, if the leader of the executive branch is discussing sensitive diplomatic issues with people he doesn't know from a hole in the wall, then there is an even larger problem. It shows that he has terrible judgment and can't be trusted to safeguard the nation's secrets.
On the recording of the dinner conversation (a recording made by Fruman), Lev tells Trump that Yovanovitch has been bad-mouthing him in Kyiv.
Trump's response was clear--“Get rid of her! Get her out tomorrow. I don’t care. Get her out tomorrow. Take her out. O.K.? Do it.”
The White House’s response to the report of the conversation didn’t deny that Trump attended the dinner, nor did it deny that it was Trump's voice.
“Every President in our history has had the right to place people who support his agenda and his policies within his Administration,” the White House press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, said in a statement.
Nope. Sorry. Still not getting your point as to why this is a big deal.
The good news is that the WH Press Secretary is doing something for her $170K/year + benefits of taxpayers' money.
The bad news is that she doesn't seem to grasp that directing a couple of Russian mob-connected guys to "take out" an American ambassador is not how "every President in our history" goes about placing supportive people in his administration.

Stupid or not, it's true.
Firtash is an oligarch "billionaire with alleged ties to the Russian mob," who is "seen by Ukrainian anti-corruption activists and Western governments as a corrupt instrument of Russia."
"Firtash is facing bribery-related charges in the U.S. and fighting extradition from Vienna."
According to a court filing by U.S. prosecutors, a month before Parnas was indicted, his wife received $1 million dollars in wire transfers from Firtash's lawyer via a bank account in Russia.
A couple problems with this rationalization:
It is unfathomable that he could not just pose for photo ops with Parnas, but also dine with him and talk about State Department affairs with him, without knowing who he is.
There's no evidence that he "dined with him", and what do you imagine strangers talk to elected officials about? The weather?

LOL. The stupid part isn't that he's a mobster (which is entirely plausible) but that Trump directed him to do what you said. That is an absolutely crazy notion that only a TDS'd mind could entertain.
"Ambassadors of the United States are persons nominated as ambassadors by the President to serve as United States diplomats to individual nations of the world, to international organizations, and as ambassadors-at-large. Their appointment needs to be confirmed by the United States Senate. An ambassador can be appointed during a recess, but he or she can only serve as ambassador until the end of the next session of Congress unless subsequently confirmed. Ambassadors serve "at the pleasure of the President", meaning they can be dismissed at any time. Appointments change regularly for various reasons, such as reassignment or retirement."

There is a tape of Trump directing them to "take out" Ambassador Yovanovitch.
