New York is considering mandatory helmets for car drivers.
One study found it could save 17 times as many people from death by head injury as a helmet law for cyclists.

Cool! Maybe we can make it like NASCAR for everyone. Flame resistant suits, 5 point harnesses, removable steering wheels, and window nets instead of glass.

We could also replace everyone's headlights with stickers that look like headlights. It sounds like fun. I think we should do it!

Except that isn't what what proposed. The proposal is to require helmets for riders of e-scooters. When asked if he would consider the idea of helmets for automobile drivers and passengers, he called for data to support the claim.

The car is suppose to be, in a way, a giant helmet. Mod cut.

It's illegal to wear a helmet while driving a car in most (?all) states now: decreases visual field and impairs hearing--less safe...So why is it required in so many states for bikers?

Mod cut.

Some basic physics & physiology: MotherNature has seen to it that we won't die from a fall of our own height by hitting out heads (~ 6ft-- terminal velocity <10mph)....A dive off a 4th story balcony (~30ft) results in a terminal velocity of 27mph..Do you think you'd survive that cuz you were wearing a helmet?

For MCs-- death rate from head injury is identical in helmet states vs non-helmet states; Neck injury rate a little higher in helmet states.

It's the insurance & helmet manufacturers who lobby for helmet laws: no helmet, if required--> no ins. pay-out. Helmets cost $200+ and need to be replaced every 5 yrs or so (padding goes bad). Big bucks to be made by requirement laws.

You don't usually die in an MVA because you hit your head. You die when your aorta ruptures like a water balloon when it hits your own ribs.

Mod cut.

Yeah, how stupid to call "for data to support the claim" per the article as opposed to the self-righteous who happily do things unsupported by anything factual.

Right but it feels good, and feelings are more important than facts.

^ Yup and the data they collect through studies usually costs millions of taxpayer dollars.
