Nearly four years after then-presidential candidate Donald Trump said he would eliminate the federal debt in eight years, the deficit has since risen by more than 16 percent under his presidency.

On Tuesday, attorney George Conway, a frequent Trump critic and husband of White House Special Counsel Kellyanne Conway, pointed out that three years into Trump's first term as president, the national debt increased by $3 trillion, bringing it to over $23 trillion now. Conway cited figures from the National Debt Tweets in his tweet.

Actually if you follow Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) that people like AOC believes in, government debt no longer matters because the government has the infinite capacity to create money. The only worry is inflation. Of course the MMT crowd probably wouldn't believe in spending all that money just to reduce corporate taxes, but instead to fund Medicare for all, free colleges etc.

This is not an endorsement of Trump who I can't stand.

Yeah, Trump is not an MMT adherent, but like most republicans these days he does believe that debt is something that should be amassed in astronomical numbers. He even called himself the "King of Debt" during his presidential campaign. This would explain why he is also known as the king of bankruptcy in some circles.

Which Democrat candidate would solve our debt problem without destroying our economy in the attempt?

Barack Obama increased the national debt more than any other President, by $8.588 TRILLION. even with the over spending of the House, Trump is still way, way under that.

I think we would get more out of affordable college and Medicare for all than we would for starting a new war or building another aircraft carrier. Have those expenses ever been challenged or questioned? Our $3 trillion dollar search for WMDs was put on the credit card.

So in other words he is maintaining the same pace of debt run up as Barack Obama.

Barack Obama walked into a situation where we were losing 745,000 jobs a month. Trump walked into a good situation but chose to loot the Treasury Dept. anyway. See the difference?
