How exaggerated is this? Is it simply a case of people telling kids “don’t be a d* to people who are different from you”..?

Read the article.

Somehow the "be nice to everyone" mantra that was taught has changed to
  • explanations of every possible permutation of diversity
  • why they are perpetual victims
  • what the exact stereotypes are
  • why you should feel sorry for them
  • who is 'keeping them down'
  • why you should feel guilty because/if you aren't them
