"Many on the right say they are for unrestricted capitalism," Where did you come up with that?
I'm a on the right and have NEVER head it before.
"IN the end, people on both sides seem to not understand the words" depends on what the meaning of the word "is" is!
Definitions of many word have changed over time.
You are one person.
There are quotes in this discussion that talk about how Capitalism is the only system that works. They don't make any distinction of restrictions, limitations, etc. They drink the coolaid, and think that "survival of the fittest" will be the best system.
See what I quoted just a few minutes ago. That is a VERY COMMON (and wrong) characterization of Capitalism from much of the right-base.
At best, they were just being lazy and forgot to state a lot of acceptions. But then again, by their own words, doesn't that make THEM a Socialist?
The left tries to muddy the waters with made up terms.
Economic socialism is when the state controls production and distribution.
Yes, it means government owned and operated means of production, which is why the discussion is moot since no one is suggesting such economic model in US.
A good lesson for everyone on the subject that I read--
For $20, have one of your kids old enough to clean, to actually clean the bathroom, the kitchen, the garage, take out the trash and mow the lawn.
When he/she asks for the promised $20, tell them they have to give 70%, or $14, to their sibling, who did nothing.
Socialism at work, kids. LOL
If taxation makes a nation socialist, then we are already a socialist country, as is the rest of the world EXCEPT the communist countries, which do not collect taxes. Yes, North Korea is tax free, and according to your argument not socialist.
I would support an amendment with business not messing with our government.
Ban lobbyists.
Why? So the government can crap on the business in anyway they see fit?
Why must I remind you that lobbyists can’t do jack if the politicians YOU elect have done their job. Maybe you need to keep your politicians in line.
As No_Recess points out, we don't have capitalism in the US, except in the black/grey markets and in a steadily decreasing amount, the crypto currency world. Various cash only transactions as well, I guess, but those would all be at the micro level since anything macro would attract Leviathan's attention and eventually put under its command and control system.
What we have is slightly less advanced Fabian socialism, and by advanced I mean just time in the system, since Europe was there 15-20 years faster than us.
Now, the love/hate thing. Americans, by and large, don't like to admit they are being told what to do by some government overlord. We ARE told what to do, threatened/coerced constantly, and live in vague, yet perpetual fear that someday Leviathan will turn the all seeing eye upon us for something real or imagined....but we don't like admitting to it, and feel like griping at least soothes some of the discomfort brought on by the cognitive dissonance. One of our more soothing gripes is for "free markets NAO!!" They've never been nor will ever be free, but it makes us feel 'Murican to run that flag up the pole.
If you want capitalism, you have to go off grid to get it. If you want legit, pure socialism, you have to move to Venezuela, North Korea or one of the other "democratic republics of Blah Blah" where they have the real thing. If you want vanilla welfare state Fabian socialism where one source of funding of OPM is people still believing they are in any sort of capitalist system and working like they are free...well, the majority of the world's governments has a place for you, the US included.

Venezuela is not pure socialism (private property still exists), but North Korea is.
Yes, it means government owned and operated means of production, which is why the discussion is moot since no one is suggesting such economic model in US.
You could say North Koreans are more or less slaves. As for Europe, none of the nations there meet the definition of socialism.
