The system that Americans hate is communism. While capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty than any other system, communism uses poverty as tool to advance their objectives, mostly the dangerous pursuit of more power and control over the people. They use racism in much the same way. We've seen this throughout history, and even in the USA as of late.
The USA doesn't have any real issue with socialism. If we did, that would be rather hypocritical, since our system is a "mixed economic system" incorporating elements of both capitalism and socialism.
Why do Americans hate democratic socialism so much and like Capitalism? Does capitalism work?
Because most of us are either immigrants or descendants of immigrants who fled countries that started with socialism and then eventually led to communism and don't want that here.
Some of us also came to the USA with troubling medical issues because the socialized healthcare systems in other countries are good for simple stuff like broken bones, simple flues and birthing but tend to not be able to deal with more complex problems because they simply do not have the funding to expand research and development.
And the Capitalism has allowed many of us to come here from other countries and with hard work, start our own business, which would have never been able to be lifted off the ground if people's money was siphoned away by the tax man for social programs.

They don't. They hate the words, not the practice. Many don't understand the words.
Pure Socialism does not exist
Pure Capitalism Does not exist.
Does Capitalism work? A very capitalistic leaning economy is the best system. It is not perfect, nothing is. But in general, as much as we can get to free market economies, it's good. That said, completely unrestrained capitalism doesn't work. And too much regulation also doesn't work.
Many on the right say they are for unrestricted capitalism, but these are the same people that are not in favor of globalism. Unrestricted globalism is a pure form of capitalism, and correctly, we can't have it (not fully unrestricted, anyway). If we did, then there would be no talk of third world labor taking our jobs, as that would be pure capitalism at work.
Many on the left think they are for socialism, but they too want to make a buck and get ahead.
IN the end, people on both sides seem to not understand the words they think they live by.
Socialism is workers owning the means of production.
In which country has the workers ever owned the means of production??
No person can come from a socialist country to America if the workers in that country didnt own the means of production. Just as a person can not come from a democratic country if that country doesnt have fair elections. Its just common sense. It doesnt matter what the leaders of those countries call themselves for propaganda purposes. We need to look at facts. Not fiction.

It means workers having a larger say...doesn’t mean workers OWNING the means of production when we’re talking about social democracy.
Germany is a great example. The Union sits on the corporate board, and the workers are seen as a partner. Workers don’t own the business. German corporatocracy has an understanding that the gears of the corporate machinery run smoother with a happy workforce. American corporations just want workers to lick the loafers of the execs and be happy to even have a job. It’s a deleterious mindset.
As a result, there’s only mistrust and little loyalty in American business.
