If it’s just access to government loans, then why (as another poster astutely pointed out) have costs at private K-12 schools increased at the same rate despite zero government lending/funding/tax credit for tuition?

People who are defending students who shirk their responsibilities to pay off their loans are overlooking the fact that people on the other side of the equation lent it to them with the understanding that it be repaid. Should too many entitled and irresponsible students decide to just say "kiss off" to the lender, there is less money coming back that is available to the younger students coming up and ready for college.
(And don't tell me there's no lender and that it's just the government. Those are still people - taxpayers.)
Sandy Nurse left out the fact that taxpayers also spent $200K to provide her with a high school education.
And this is why our entire public education system needs to be revamped. We are overspending on our children in a misguided effort to try to give to every single one of them a college degree... when they clearly don't all need one, and can't find a job to justify the expense of that fancy college degree. Meanwhile, Pete Buttigeig wants to spend more of our taxpayer money on our public education system. And I say NO to that idea.

now you have a bunch, who want to say FU to everyone else, and say fine you paid your, now pay mine...
if the government (taxpayers) pays off their loans...its a big FU to the ones who did the correct thing...its also direct discrimination...… (which means its unconstitutional, and therefore can NOT be done)

I agree in part. I’d support government loans with an interest rate that covers only the cost to administer the program. In addition, there need to be changes to the rules of borrowing. For instance, if students take out loans for say 15 credit hours and drop a 3 credit class, the university sends them a refund. That refund should be paid back to the lender so the student isn’t incurring debt unrelated to course work toward graduation. If that means no money for a Spring Break trip, too bad.
The university I went to didn't charge any more for 15 credits than it did for 12 credits. Twelve was full time and you could take up to 18 hours at the same full time price.

My son graduated from the United States Air Force Academy. He had great grades in HS. He was a top ranked national athlete. Worked his ass off in college. Nothing came easy for him. He has no debt. He now owes 5 years of service to our country. I went to community college. I could have went to a private college or a state school. Paid it myself. I don't feel bad for people that have loans. We all make choices.
