My impression was that the term “colored person” was phased out because that term started to become offensive but now it seems we have come full circle and are back to it.
I had an older black friend years ago (she's since died) who hated being called black, preferring colored. She was bullied by her family and other black people for being so dark. That was the first time I'd ever heard that blacks discriminated against each other.
What is the PC term for black people who aren't American?
I vaguely recall my Anthropology 101 class using the terms Negro, Caucasian and Oriental (or Mongoloid).
This is a misconception. Traditionally in the United States there was a strict black-white dichotomy. People of African descent were colored, and everybody else was white.
People often wonder why American history is only about whites and blacks - this is why. Everybody else was considered white - and they were saying that they were white. They didn't reinvent themselves as "people of color" until after the civil rights movement was over.
This is not true. See Ozawa vs. United States and Thind vs United States. Both men were ineligible for citizenship because they were not classified as free white people.
Why are white people so obsessed over how black people identify themselves?
Black people do not identify our self's as "people of color". Politicians who are trying to push a narrative of greater political power than 12% of the population gives use "people of color" to say that black people are a subset of a larger coalition group including Latinos, indigenous Americans and peoples of Asian/Pacific Islander heritages .
I don't think P.O.C. a great term, but I think it's a useful catch-all for "non-white" since that's how things often play out. And I've made that same point as you about "colored." It seems linguistically hypocritical, doesn't it?
I'm white, though, if you think that discounts my opinion.
Just utilize the freeway digital signs and let us know what group decides to call themselves that day. Really helps the rest of us know what your calling yourselves on any giving day.
NAACP - National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Here is a quote from their mission statement:
"The six NAACP Game Changers below address the major areas of inequality facing African Americans that are the focus of the NAACP’s work."
The NAACP considers the term "colored" to be outdated, but still applicable.
Yeah, well that’s their opinion, but it AIN’T applicable nor was it ever applicable in reality.
