As someone who pursues genealogy, I think it's rotten and a sign of the decay in our society. People don't even respect our American history anymore if they think it's funny to do something like this. Not only do these memorials represent the beginning of our American history, to a lot of Americans they represent an ancestor who came over on the Mayflower. So to those people, it feels like an attack on their family. And A LOT of people who do genealogy end up finding a Mayflower ancestor, to their upmost amazement--there must be millions of descendants by now, after 400 years of generations.
This is the same kind of disrespect and craziness that drives people to deface cemetery stones. What will be their next childish amusement? Graffiti on the Statue of Liberty? How about the 911 memorial? The Viet Nam Veterans Wall?
I would not be surprised if it was because of the White colonialism stuff. I wonder if the tagger(s) consider how colonialism in this country is/was not limited to being practiced by White people.
