when people think of “government employee”, they think of a disgruntled middle- aged black lady working at DMV or SSN facility and hating life. They don’t think about NASA scientists, astronauts, fighter pilots, FBI/DEA/USSS/CIA agents, etc

I was assigned to a support unit for a U.S. Special Forces Group in Iraq during troop surge in 2003-2004. Many of the seasoned SF operators left the military to work for private companies like Blackwater and made triple the money.

Aren’t you in the aviation field (judging by your username)? How many private airlines recruit their aviators from the military?

Very likely.

Same is true for many pensioners in states that do not tax public or private retirement income.

You're right. I shouldn't generalize like that. However, I did spend the first five years of my career in Government, and saw the waste, politics, and a workforce that was at least twice what it should have been. But, I appreciate those that serve, so thanks for that.

If you don’t like it, you can do one of two things
1) grow some balls and apply to be a cop in Chicago, then you will get the same benefits
or
2) use your voice and voting power to eliminate pension for future cop applicants
Yes I understand that the people who pay his salary and who in theory he works for, had no say in the matter.

And Im not intrested in taking a job that involves shooting, beating, looting and kidnapping people who aren't bothering anyone else.

He was Chief of Patrol with authority over 20+ Police Districts, including SWAT.

What is curious is he did not apply for the job nor was he among those recommended by the Police Board, the latter, not necessarily a bad thing, in Chicago.

My point was that he was 'appointed' to all of those positions, he never went through the ranks. And he wasn't a bad cop and that's a good thing.
