A recent meta-analysis finds that 22 studies on Medicare for All agree that it saves money over the status-quo. Right-wing Mercatus Center finds 2 trillion in savings over 10 years by switching to single-payer. That's the a mathematical/empirical reality that Trump cannot contest.
It's true that Bernie has been vague on other elements of his platform; I'd personally like to see advocating for a reduction in the military budget to boost social-welfare. But, his lack of knowledge about the cost of policy is hardly unique to him, or the Democratic party. "Numbers guy" Paul Ryan said tax cuts would reduce the deficit. He was wildly wrong.
In general, we ought to encourage more economists and policy experts from academia to consult candidates on their plans.
And I can reply to that with neighbors I had back when I lived in NY, the wife and kids were dual citizens of the US and Canada. And guess where they would go anytime they needed healthcare? The 3 min drive to a local hospital, or the 3 hr drive to the nearest Canadian one?

If they live close enough to a hospital in Canada that does not get lots of turnover, then that is just fortunate circumstance.
If their local US hospital cannot treat them sooner, then they live a heavily populated portion of USA. In more heavily populated areas of Canada, the service is slower.
