You are ignoring the downward pressure on wages when housewives entered the labor market. This was a larger economic reality than illegal immigration could have ever been.

Yeah, the reality of global trade is that we'll all settle on some middle ground for standard of living...but we're so far above others that reality means Americans have as far to go down as the 3rd world has to go up.

Good grief. Read man.

Timing is irrelevant(other than the result of just spiraling debt). The average worker can't make enough to provide the basic necessities in a year on a pure dollar amount basis regardless of spending habits is the point.

Short answer (and I have no regrets): the feminist movement.

A great thing, but you can’t add 30% more workers to the labor force without real-world consequences.
