Trump is making a huge blunder by downplaying this. If the coronavirus explodes here it will doom his presidential chances. If it doesn't, he still looks foolish to downplay it while it erupts in Italy, South Korea, Japan....and of course China. It looks like he cares more about the fragile stock market keeping it's bubble unpopped.
With that said....yes...China is politicizing it.
Remember, China claimed that Trump and other countries were taking draconian measures against China to stop the spread such as blocking flights out of Wuhan the epicenter of the outbreak, which China claimed hurt their economy and is xenophobic in nature...when in reality Trump should have taken bigger steps earlier on.
Actually, Ji Xinping may have some domestic worries that are among the various factors causing him to alter course from how the cv was originally handled &/or reported in China.
Authoritarians, including Communist dictators have seen their own power ebb and flow over the decades that Communism has existed and held the reigns of power.
As a matter of fact, Communist dictators have been moved out & been replaced when dissatisfaction below them bubbled to the surface, ala Nikita Krushchev's removal from power in the old Soviet Union.
The Trump news conference, to this point at 2:01 p.m. is embarrassing.... Poorly done...his staff must be retching.
P.S. The experts thankfully seem serious ( except for the Trump glorification) and did a good job of updating, here at 2:17 p.m. But OOPS, Trump is back at the podium.
