Alcohol is really not that strong. The vast majority of people who drink dont cause any problems. Its like cigarettes/cigars. I dont know anything about Mary Jane though. If its also not that strong, then I dont see anything wrong with it.
Right. Knock down a pint of Wild Turkey 101 and then say that again.
The alcohol is probably more unhealthy (if only for the pounds), makes a person intoxicated, and is more addictive yet it's considered normal. If a person goes home and lights up a joint they are considered a deadbeat drag on society and in most states, a criminal who belongs behind bars. You might even go out with your coworkers for beers after work, but if you ask if they want to smoke a joint you'll lose your job and good luck finding another one thanks to pre-employment drug screening. Alcohol typically makes people more aggressive and to certain people, more prone to anger and violence. Weed typically mellows people out and just makes them laugh. Even if you use marijuana for medicinal reasons, you have to keep it on the down-low because conservative society says it's just an excuse for potheads to smoke pot. Yet, the same people wouldn't bat an eye at people popping Oxycontin all day long.
Why is drinking a few beers after work to wind down the day socially acceptable but smoking a joint isn't?
1. Lungs are for inhaling air to derive oxygen for the bloodstream. They are not for inhaling smoke to get a buzz.
2. When you drink alcohol, at least you are ingesting a liquid into your stomach, which is a normal function of the stomach.
Since when was smoking socially unacceptable? People smoke every day . Nobody looks sideways at the person buying a pack of smokes from 7-11
The stigma grows year on year. Fewer and fewer people smoke every day. Fewer and fewer places are acceptable to smoke in.
I don't personally know a single person that smokes, but that may well be a self selection matter (It's handy that it makes them stink, then you can screen them out in job interviews etc). But given the smoking rates are below 15%, it's probably not that uncommon especially if your circle of contacts are well educated and have good jobs.
If I was at an event, the response a person would get from lighting up a cigarette or joint would be the same.

Where are you getting this information from?
I am a field marketing coordinator for one of the top 3 largest gas station/convenience stores in the country and cigarettes are our #2 best selling product, (fuel is #1 of course)...that speaks volumes about how many people are smoking today!
Here is another good indicator...cigarettes are still sold at Walgreens!!!! (even though Walgreens slogan is 'Be healthy and well')??

First of all, the fact for convenience stores cigarettes are #2 doesn't say much. It's like saying a wine and beer store -- wine is number 2 to beer....
That and the fact that weed is seen as more of a "drug" than alcohol is.
Both have the potential for abuse of course, and I'll be the first to admit that alcohol CAN be much worse in its effects, both physically and to society.
However, the fact remains that many people drink socially, having a single drink or two without getting drunk or even tipsy.
But you really can't do that with weed.
Yes, you can use it in a social setting, but the entire purpose of pot is to catch a buzz.
You can have a drink and not get drunk.
But you can't smoke a joint and not get high.[/QUOTE]
Only to novices. When you have been smoking it for a long time it's not really a high, it's just a calming and relaxing effect. Long time smokers use that for their anxiety rather than pharma pills.

Are you serious??
Smoking rates are widely published around the world. It is in significant and continuous decline in developed countries.

You don't have to drink in large quantities. Why do leftists often talk in extremes?
