Trump campaign has the burden of proof that the information was false and published with actual malice or disregard for the truth.

This from the POTUS who blasts Fox News when commissioned polls do not show a favorable outcome for him.

Good luck with that.

Sounds more like a campaign tactic - we have sued therefore the target of the suit is wrong.

The base will eat it up.

The Trump Campaign Just Sued the 'Washington Post'

President Trump's reelection campaign announced on Tuesday they have filed a lawsuit against the Washington Post for libel with regards to two stories they published alleging Russian connections with the campaign.

...
The two articles the campaign are suing over includes an article from July 2019 by Paul Waldman, "which contains the defamatory statement 'who knows what sort of aid Russia and North Korea will give to the Trump campaign, now that he has invited them to offer their assistance?'"

...
The second article the campaign says has defamatory statements is authored by Greg Sargent and was published in June 2019, which claimed "that Special Counsel Robert Mueller concluded that the Campaign 'tried to conspire with' a 'sweeping and systematic' attack by Russia against the 2016 United States presidential election."

Reminder on the last one... Mueller concluded there was no conspiracy between the campaign and Russia.
It'll end up like all the bull**** suits he's filed over the years... Nowhere.

Hillary should sue him over the email nonsense and Obama should sue him over the birther nonsense

Sounds like you'd be happier in a society with exclusively state-run media where you don't have to deal with "irresponsible" divergence of published opinions from your "responsible" opinion. Suggest you look into moving.

The NYT broke the email story and ran 15,000 articles on it.

I wonder how the "campaign" can sue for defamation. Wouldn't the person allegedly being defamed have to be the one to bring the lawsuit? Any lawyers on here who can answer?

I had no real issues with Obama but by the standard some of you are setting with the "Trump is attacking a free press" what Obama did to one of more press members is far worse. He spied on and went after AT LEAST a couple of prominent investigative reporters for looking into and reporting on fast and furious and other scandals/potential scandals involving his administration.
Here is something for your "substance"...

RICHMOND, Va. (CN) – The Fourth Circuit on Friday upheld the dismissal of a lawsuit brought by a former CBS News investigative reporter claiming she was spied on by the Obama administration.
But apparently she thinks the third time will be the charm. LOL.

Trump would have better luck if he sued Nunes's cow.

This is just more of Trump harassing and trying to interfere with the free press. Libel only applies if someone knowingly makes a false statement. Both Waldman and Sargent are opinion columnists. You can't sue them because you disagree with their opinions.

Waldman, in his article, referenced an interview between Trump and George Stephanopulous:

"During an interview Wednesday morning in the Oval Office, President Trump opined on the Russia investigation, telling Stephanopoulos he would consider accepting damaging information about his political rivals from foreign nations."

He used Trump's own words:

President Trump: Okay, let’s put yourself in a position: you’re a congressman, somebody comes up and says, “Hey I have information on your opponent.” Do you call the FBI?

Stephanopoulos: If it’s coming from Russia you do.

President Trump: You don’t--

And by the way...No, Mueller did NOT conclude that there was no conspiracy between the campaign and Russia. Saying they couldn't prove a conspiracy is not the same as saying there was none.

This sounds like the writer is speculating, not defaming. "Who knows what sort of aid..."

"tried to conspire... " Must be referring to the "Russia if you're listening..." statement by Trump. We all know he said that.

I think the Russians really duped the Trump campaign.
