If someone is a carpenter, has over 2 million in liquid assets, no debt on a home, wife is making 6 figures, collecting rent of over 10k /mo on owned properties, gets a hip done at 58 and collects 2800/month disability, Is the disability unethical or am I just jealous? If he can't do his job anymore, but still maintains his rentals, drags deer out of the woods, etc. etc.,.shouldn't he get a job as an estimator or something?

It's his money he has paid in insurance and I might add --- he could not opt out in paying, when he paid his taxes on his assets.

Policy Basics: Federal Payroll Taxes

However, I was looking at disability myself, because I have a health issue that reared its ugly head just this last April. If I work, (according to AARP website info) with the disability and I make over 1200.00, they will consider me able.

so ... idk, by the way this is why I object to government mandate over my wages earned. They take the money but they won't give it back unless I qualify. I might fair better with a private insurance company or stocks where as status on health is not an issue with collecting on interest earnings.

Any Taxpayer funded scheme is unethical as they are all they are funded through theft. Additionally govt runs its schemes with the lowest level of competence and is actually rewarded for doing so. Unlike private insurance, welfare, charity, etc. which run on voluntary contributions, when a state run scheme goes bust it just demands more of everyones money. There is no incentive to police and every incentive for incompetence and unethical behavior.

Right now, income (other than wages) and resources do not affect eligibility for social security disability benefits. Social Security disability applicants or beneficiaries can have rental homes, investments, land, stocks, bonds, and CDs without any penalty.

Is it fair? I am not sure. Is it unethical? well, they probably did not do it illegally. (although, the "hip" lady lol probably makes a little too much, no? ) Should we tax payers demand changes? probably.

I know 4 people, and I don't know many people, who did this, and every one of them is just as able to do his previous job, after the health issue. Just because you paid your SS insurance all those years, doesn't mean you deserve to collect it back. That's why it's called insurance. These laws must be changed along with a asset limit on collecting normal SS.

They could not opt out in paying it, so this is where you and I will disagree ... if they should collect it back it is their money as they earned it.

Me, I won't see a dime of it. Seen it right off ... and yet, I can not opt out, as I will continue working, because how else will I pay my bills (and yes, I have a big issue) and the government will continue sucking up that money and they will use it to make their payroll I guess. God knows where the money goes.

Two things, one --- web site said I have to cooperate with them. And I thought, yea, their just going to p-- me off and two, I was all for the Bush proposal he made way back when, when he said, write everyone that has paid into SS a check and close out that program.

ps: they say two wrongs do not make a right and they say to every rule there is an exception ... to the question of ethical, this is the exception to the rule.

Ellis,
You can't opt out of many insurances if you want to drive or borrow money for a home. You can't get those premiums back unless your claim is legit. They have people to make sure the claim is legit. SSD claims have lawyers hounding you for your case.

I think you are just being jealous.

Some people believe it is the government’s job to make us all financially equal. I am not one of those people.

I believe it is the government’s job to treat us all equally.

In other words, he deserves to collect the same amount as anyone else in his situation, regardless of how well he was able to save and invest. No more. No less. It would be unethical of the government to penalize him, just because he was good with his finances.

I have private disability insurance that will dwarf what I will get from the government. Yet, i would be more than fine without it. Does that mean they shouldn’t pay me either?
