Why?

Some officials hinted at it. It is to rapidly build herd immunity. In this type of plan the government actively pretends everything is fine, and then resists logical action when it is clear everything is not fine.

This method essentially guarantees as many people get the virus as soon as possible.

Once the bulk of the "herd" has an immunity and stop passing the virus, the virus will subside to background levels and will only be as deadly as something like the flu.

It will not be pretty. But is effective for a nation without control of the population or a strong health care system.

Notice the vast bulk of all WH efforts is to shore up the stock exchange and has nothing to do with stopping the spread.
Come on now. I am not at ALL a fan of Trump, and think he's been doing his usual lousy job, with all the lying, the fictitious boasting, the fictitious accusations, calling the journalists "fake news", and making the situation, which is very serious for the nation, all about HIM. That said, I certainly don't believe he's trying to carry out mass murder! He is a pathological liar and a pathological narcissist, not a mass murderer. Think you're waaaaaay offbase here.

Trump failed to listen to anyone about the warnings and Trump lovers want to defend him so hey let’s just blame every other president prior to him. LOL. Classic

The situation is also subject to rapid change.

Thats not the mortality rate. The people who die now are from the cases weeks ago. The deaths are lagging behind. And no one knows the number of cases in each country when testing differs so much between countries.

Strange how some countries like Spain are being hit so hard while France and Germany are a fraction. I have to wonder about the reporting system in places like Russia and Saudi Arabia. Places in Africa and Venezuela its likely non-existent.

How badly do leftists want (even their misinformed and delusional idea of) a European-style health system?
I think when this virus has finished, we can look to see who did the best and why...that will be a better barometer of which system operates best in this type crisis. Although it's a fair question to ask why the USA and Germany have been doing so much better comparatively than Italy, Spain, France and the UK.

Inside one common location: take the number of deaths, and divide that by the number of infected. That's the mortality rate for that locale. Repeat for each locale you wish to compare that to.

As they are all in the same boat--Earth--they all are going to lag in reporting with some variation in testing. And yet, the United States, with almost no testing but what testing and evaluation there is to date, has a mere fraction of the mortality rate of many other Western European countries, let alone Asia. With testing, that rate would only decrease further.

The US has 708 serious cases, the UK has 20, so the situation could rapidly change in relation to mortality rates.

Furthermore the more elderly and infirm you are the more likely you are to sucumb so the percentage of elderly people is also a factor.

Saying that the UK has had only 240 deaths, in a far more densely populated country of 66 million people.

Finally those diagnosed are often just the tip of the iceberg and using diagnosis firgres in relation to mortality rates is not going to give a true picture, indeed the disease n yung people can be less severe and may just involve staying at home until the symptoms are gone.

Russia has been carrying out a low grade war with Ukraine for over 5 years now and have yet to acknowledge it - tells you all you need to know about Putin's transparency. Putin is as big of a liar as Trump, but he has much greater control over the government, people, and media, so little dissenting information emerges.
