That is 1.5 million deaths. Reality is letting it spread would swamp our hospitals leading to many more deaths. But I guess all those people are going to die eventually from something someday so who cares, right?
Did you pick up on the conflicting messaging at the end of your link?

This was no joke in Wuhan, it is no joke in Italy - and it won't be here, either.

Travel ban helpful but far, far, far from what is really needed which is massive testing, tracing, quarantine, and isolation - to break chain of transmission.

Hunkering down - which is what country is doing now for possibly the next months will have a worse effect on the economy than 9/11 - and we'll be in a recession very close to that of The Great Recession.

We can't stop doing business in this country without a HUGE economic consequence. Right now EVERYONE essentially is doing nothing. Games/conferences, billion dollar events cancelled right and left. Air travel drastically reduced.

Every single airline will go bankrupt. They all did after 9/11 - and the aftereffects of that will NOT even approach what we are looking at. Massive job losses, foreclosures, unemployment.

We can't stop doing business - not for a week, much less three months.

It's gonna be bad - unless a miracle takes place.
well, I think as soon as we all do some level of social distancing, we will buy us some time.
the decision is ours, not trump's.

Yup. Someone on another thread said Dow at 15,000 - I thought that was crazy. But, if we don't get this country back to business in a week, 15,000 it is. Maybe worse.

I agree with both of those characterizations. But if you are going to call them out for their obvious shortcomings you need to do the same about Trump.

Social distancing won't do a darn thing to help the economy and stock market until someone says new cases are on the decline. That's going to take months. Disastrous for the economy and stock market. Horrible.

if this is the case, and that is "people refuse to do social distancing, just demand a darn test", then yes, you are right, we are doomed.

Trump has shortcomings, but not enough to vote for either of those idiots.

We are not going to be back to business in a week. Probably 3 to 6 months just dealing with the virus. Unless we do Chinese style emergency measures. Getting back to business will be a very slow process. Like many have said you can put the brakes on and stop an economy as big as this one and just accelerate quickly back to normal.

I think we are going to test 20,000 in the morning, bounce off of it for a couple days then retest and go lower.

It certainly pisses me off that Trump has made light of COVID-19, but I'm a lot more pissed at the Chinese than anyone else. This pandemic was 100% their fault, and because they treat their citizens as cheap slave labor, they've taken over the manufacture of absolutely everything. So now we're SOL for medical supplies that only China makes anymore. Medical supplies that are needed to deal with the stupid Kung Flu those bastards started in the first place. Yes, we were the idiots who let it happen. I voted for Barack Obama once because I thought he'd actually do something about that and John McCain had no intention of fixing it. Obama didn't do a damn thing about it. And now the USA -- the country that stopped making stuff for ourselves -- gets to hunker down and wait this thing out. But don't expect China to send N95 masks or any other medical supplies our way. They'll keep those for themselves, thank you very much. Better fire up some factories post haste and hope we can remember how to make stuff for ourselves.

How many of us will die because of all the outsourced manufacturing? When you don't actually make anything, you become powerless. All it takes is a catastrophe that forces you to do everything for yourself to force you to realize how screwed you really are.
