His team reached its projections by using case fatality ratios ranging from .1, similar to seasonal flu, to .5, a moderately severe pandemic, and 1.0, a severe one. The infection rate ranged from 0.1 percent of the population to 50 percent. The deaths would not necessarily happen over a month or a year, but could occur over two or three years, Frieden told my colleagues.

But not to worry, Trump says everything is lollipops and unicorns right now. Thank god!

No, they won't because they will have lost a whole lot of money with the tanking economy. And by then there will be layoffs and the economy will look even worse.

People do not forget when it comes to their money. To say nothing of the millions of people who will have suffered the loss of a loved one due to this administration's utter failure of a response to the crisis.

I wouldn't count on that. Repercussions, both in terms of human cost and economic loss will follow this long into the fall. This will touch us for a good long time and we're not currently even out of the 2nd inning.

I just heard from a friend who works ER in Long Beach, CA, one of America's largest shipping ports, and was told they have no test kits. None. Who will unload those ships if everyone is laid-low? Yes, 2nd inning at best. Buckle up kids, it's going to get much worse very soon and won't be forgotten anytime soon.

I hope you’re right but my expectations remain low.

This is a game changer. The country is going to look vastly different by November, and none of it will be good. And virtually every American will be touched by this double whammy of the pandemic and the economy so that they won't be able to ignore it.

Will there still be brainwashed people who will continue to laud this president in the wake of his egregious mishandling of this crisis? Of course there will be. But we can't worry about the brainwashed now. They are a lost cause.

What this health crisis has done is highlighted some of the shortcomings in the USA, even with a robust economy.

The fact so many employees don't have sick leave, don't have health insurance, live pay check to pay check even after years of a health economy shows cracks in the 'great' economy.

That's a crack that folks like Sanders and Biden use to show problems with Trump's claims of a great economy.

In 2018 Trump reformed the federal prison system with The First Step Act.
https://fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/R45558.pdf
The act modified mandatory minimum prison sentences for some drug traffickers with prior drug convictions by increasing the threshold for prior convictions that count toward triggering higher mandatory minimums for repeat offenders, reducing the 20-year mandatory minimum (applicable where the offender has one prior qualifying conviction) to a 15-year mandatory minimum, and reducing a life-in-prison mandatory minimum (applicable where the offender has two or more prior qualifying convictions) to a 25-year mandatory minimum.

The act made the provisions of the Fair Sentencing Act of 2010 (P.L. 111-220) retroactive so that currently incarcerated offenders who received longer sentences for possession of crack cocaine than they would have received if sentenced for possession of the same amount of powder cocaine before the enactment of the Fair Sentencing Act can submit a petition in federal court to have their sentences reduced. The act also expands the safety valve provision, which allows courts to sentence low-level, nonviolent drug offenders with minor criminal histories to less than the required mandatory minimum for an offense. Finally, the act eliminated the stacking provision, which allowed prosecutors to charge offenders with a second and subsequent use of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking or violent offense in the same criminal incident, which, if the offender is convicted, carries a 25-year mandatory minimum. Now, the mandatory minimum will only apply when the offender has a prior conviction for use of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking or violent crime from a previous criminal prosecution.

The U.S. Just Became a Net Oil Exporter for the First Time in 75 Years.
America turned into a net oil exporter last week, breaking almost 75 years of continued dependence on foreign oil and marking a pivotal -- even if likely brief -- moment toward what U.S. President Donald Trump has branded as "energy independence."
The shift to net exports is the dramatic result of an unprecedented boom in American oil production, with thousands of wells pumping from the Permian region of Texas and New Mexico to the Bakken in North Dakota to the Marcellus in Pennsylvania.

The United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA) is an updated version of the nearly 25-year-old, trillion-dollar North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
It includes major changes on cars and new policies on labor and environmental standards, intellectual property protections, and some digital trade provisions.

On December 19, the USMCA passed the House with a vote of 385 to 41.
About a month later — on the same day President Trump’s impeachment trial was set to begin — the Senate overwhelmingly approved the USMCA, 89 to 10.
On January 29, Trump officially signed the USMCA, notching a major achievement for the president as he heads into the 2020 election.
https://www.vox.com/2018/10/3/179300...deal-explained

Here’s a brief overview of what’s in it:

Country of origin rules: Automobiles must have 75 percent of their components manufactured in Mexico, the US, or Canada to qualify for zero tariffs (up from 62.5 percent under NAFTA).

Labor provisions: 40 to 45 percent of automobile parts must be made by workers who earn at least $16 an hour by 2023. Mexico agreed to pass new labor laws to give greater protections to workers, including migrants and women. Most notably, these laws are supposed to make it easier for Mexican workers to unionize.

US farmers get more access to the Canadian dairy market: The US got Canada to open up its dairy market to US farmers, a big issue for Trump.

Intellectual property and digital trade: The deal extends the terms of copyright to 70 years beyond the life of the author (up from 50). It also includes new provisions to deal with the digital economy, such as prohibiting duties on things like music and ebooks, and protections for internet companies so they’re not liable for content their users produce.

Sunset clause: The agreement adds a 16-year sunset clause — meaning the terms of the agreement expire, or “sunset,” after 16 years. The deal is also subject to a review every six years, at which point the US, Mexico, and Canada can decide to extend the USMCA.

According to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the net worth of the bottom half of the population was 1,070,183 millions of dollars at the start of 2017. As of the third quarter of 2019, it was 1,668,034, and that’s an increase of 55.86 percent.
For the top one percent, their net worth was 29,955,829 millions of dollars. In the third quarter of 2019, it was 34,533,370. That’s an increase of 15.28 percent, making the increase for the bottom half of Americans more than 3.5 times the increase for the top half.

6.2 million people have dropped off food stamps since President Donald Trump’s first month in office.
Data from the USDA shows 6,268,285 individuals have left the food stamp program since Trump took office.
In February 2017, the first month after Trump took office, 42,297,791 persons were participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. As of June 2019, 36,029,506 persons were participating in the program.
Similarly, 20,937,903 households were participating in the program in February of 2017 – a number which slimmed down to 18,230,968 by June 2019 revealing that 2,706,935 households dropped out of the food stamps program since Trump took office.

Under the Obama administration as part of a 2009 stimulus package, states were allowed to waive work requirements for food stamps and the number of childless adults on food stamps doubled.
The number of able-bodied adults on food stamps doubled from 1.9 million in 2008 to 3.9 million in 2010 when Obama signed his stimulus bill and suspended a rule under the 1996 Welfare Reform Law that regulated how long able-bodied adults without dependents could collect food stamps.
“This report once again confirms that President Obama has severely gutted the welfare work requirements that Americans have overwhelmingly supported since President Clinton signed them into law,” House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said in a September 2012 statement.
