Money is fiat, not real stuff/wealth. Of course this is different. Sometimes extreme measures are needed. IMO we're getting there.

How about you add all the context instead of using the political hack of the statement.

Quote:
Obama, July 13: There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me — because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t — look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. (Applause.)

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.

So we say to ourselves, ever since the founding of this country, you know what, there are some things we do better together. That’s how we funded the GI Bill. That’s how we created the middle class. That’s how we built the Golden Gate Bridge or the Hoover Dam. That’s how we invented the Internet. That’s how we sent a man to the moon. We rise or fall together as one nation and as one people, and that’s the reason I’m running for President — because I still believe in that idea. You’re not on your own, we’re in this together.

Quote Mining

Quote:
Quoting out of context (sometimes referred to as contextomy or quote mining) is an informal fallacy and a type of false attribution[citation needed] in which a passage is removed from its surrounding matter in such a way as to distort its intended meaning.[1] Contextomies may be either intentional or accidental if someone misunderstands the meaning and omits something essential to clarifying it, thinking it to be non-essential.

Arguments based on this fallacy typically take two forms:

As a straw man argument, it involves quoting an opponent out of context in order to misrepresent their position (typically to make it seem more simplistic or extreme) in order to make it easier to refute. It is common in politics.
As an appeal to authority, it involves quoting an authority on the subject out of context, in order to misrepresent that authority as supporting some position.[2]

Then there's the Swine Flu of 2009... since you are bringing up a death count.

June 2012... Death rates from 2009 "swine flu" pandemic 15 times higher than earlier estimates, study finds

The 2009 H1N1 pandemic that swept through several continents took the lives of 18,500 people from April of that year through August 2010 - or so health officials said at the time.

A new study reveals that the actual death count from the pandemic caused by the so-called "swine flu" strain could be more than fifteen times higher.

I don't like pulling the plug on the economy either by shutting down everything. But the majority of people are freaking out about it and self quarantining themselves ahead of time. It is what it is - which is part of the media's complicity in this.

It is easy to play armchair QB and assume what would have happened. We could have stayed as normal and it would have been a catastrophe... who knows.

He meant no man is an island and whatever success you had likely was enabled by another person. No person is successful without help. Not even Trump.

The media is complicit in the NBA cancelling its season, Amazon instructing employees to work from home, private universities dismissing their students, etc?

What a President should NOT be doing is dispensing guidance that directly contradicts that of health experts within his own administration.

The comparison to swine flu is dumb anyways.

Quote:
But, contrary to Trump’s claims, the death rate for COVID-19 has far outpaced H1N1 over the same span.

The CDC had confirmed 75 COVID-19 deaths through Monday. By contrast, 16 days after the first swine flu death, there were only three H1N1 deaths reported to the CDC.

The CDC estimates about 12,000 Americans ended up dying from swine flu between April 2009 and April 2010.

The CDC director at that time, Tom Frieden, now says more than a million Americans could die from COVID-19 if the spread isn’t slowed.

Dr. Frank Welch, medical director for emergency preparedness at the Louisiana Department of Health, said H1N1 didn’t go away. Many people don’t realize it’s now part of the seasonal flu and covered by the annual flu vaccine. Welch said COVID-19 is completely new, is hitting on top of the seasonal flu, has no vaccine and clearly warrants the stronger response because nobody is immune.
