I was a cement mason back in the seventies and I was in a union with no sick leave. The point that I was making was that the money that the once powerful unions gave to politicians made them a formidable lobby.

Isn’t that called slavery?

No one has a gun to the heads of the average European and they have sick leave, twenty days of vacation or more, maternity leave, family leave, and several paid holidays by law.

What do we have by law? Nothing, nothing, and nothing. Get rid of the Corporate Socialist Republicans in November. They've been bleeding us white since Reagan.

I haven't posted for a while because so many of you are so hopeless, but isn't it time to get rid of these dinosaurs?

Pack your bags then Sweetie.

If a business is shuttered, that ain't sick leave. Get a clue.

Sure they do. If they refuse to pay the taxes for it, they will have the authorities at their doorstep. If they refuse to comply, they will be forced to.

That's right.

The average middle-class American should have tens of thousands of dollars -- really, more like hundreds of thousands of dollars -- set aside to not only pay for the inevitable medical bills resulting from a prolonged illness, but also to be able to continue paying one's mortgage/rent and other life expenses with a family.

Why is there always so much resistance in the US to the family-friendly policies the rest of the advanced world effortlessly implements that allow citizens to feel less vulnerable and stressed?

The .1% of the 1%.
Think of this. They have 5 bedroom houses on a key in Florida, a ten bedroom house in South Hampton, NY and a 150 foot boat to bring them back and forth.
If they were ever salaried it was for ten minutes while they were learning the business. More of their millions come from a 1099-R than will ever come from a W-2.
When they get old they look more like Dan Quayle than the rest of us who get fat from sitting behind a desk and grey from worry.
They've never been on the subway and never flew coach.

They foot the bill through smaller dividends. Not by increasing the debt.
