My daughter owns a salon and they are shut down until who knows when. My son works at a restaurant and they are trying to switch to take out to survive but it's not looking like that will work for them.

These are dark times we're living in. My sympathies for the people forced out of work. My turn may be coming up soon.

Yup, the economic maelstrom begins.

It won't be just lower end service jobs either. Another friend is a bariatric surgeon. He's basically on furlough because most of his surgeries are elective and they're only using hospital space now for COVID emergencies and for life threatening cases. Another friend just got out of dental school and is now let go from where she got hired at a small firm because they aren't cleaning peoples' teeth due to risk of transmission of COVID. This will be very, very bad. I am actually legit scared about what's coming. No magic economic bullet exists because this is a health crisis. You can give people money, but if they can't spend it on anything it won't help to keep businesses open.

You have the Chinese communist party to thank for this.

We may owe them a bit of thanks because we see we must reject globalism, return manufacturing to the US, extract damages for their malfeasance, and will now embrace national sovereignty for the next 100 years.

Many places WILL close down due to this, but have to remember, when its all over and done, NEW places will open up and take their spots, so its not all bad, its just temporary, 4-6 months at the most.

If these places had shut down earlier, it probably would have helped to prevent the spread, I know its tough to hear, but going thru drive thrus, or standing in lines for take out, at gas stations, etc, is NOT a good idea, Ive seen first hand, that people will NOT follow the distancing rules on their own...this endangers EVERYONE.

Everybody is going to want to plan for the end of this because once we get a handle on it, everybody will want to return to life as usual. If you own a restaurant, people will come back again. If you own a gym, people will come back. So don't completely burn your bridges with your workers. You're going to need them back.

Thanks China! You've screwed everyone in the world!

The one change I hope we see: A widespread boycott on "Made in China."

Takeout isn’t sustainable for a lot of restaurants, particularly ones that would need to adapt fine dining dishes into something more appropriate-and lower priced-for takeout.

My SO and I both work in the restaurant industry (in vastly different roles) and our jobs are effectively shut down. We’re luckier than a lot of people, but this is a devastating side effect.
