Innocent thing. Stay home or do not gather more than .. people.
Very well justified with good intentions but.... suddenly, you can't go to work. And how will carpet installer "work from home"? Or, other blue collar hands on professions? Same time, panic causes less orders, as folks are literally barricading themselves and don't want to have anyone come to do jobs, routinely done before.
Ok, so with good intentions, we shut down stadiums. No big deal. Right. But what happened to all the infrastructure that serviced those games?

Can't gather more than .. people. Ok, how many plants, factories and offices have LESS than that number?

And so on.
Just like catalytic converter is choking car engine, "for the best of humanity" so do all those indirect restrictions choke economy. And hit is very low and mean, as it mostly hits low wage people.
Does no one engage reality? Our local employment department is deluged with Help Wanted positions. You can apply online.

Go to work.

Texas doesn't have a monopoly on idiot politicians. According to cell phone tracking maps, East Texas is doing pretty good with SIP, West Texas not so much. That makes sense. East Texas is right across the river from LA, West Texas is mostly cows.

How's Trump workin' for ya'll now folks?
Perhaps, if he wants to crankstart the economy, he should lead by example and attend Easter church services in NYC.

What percentage of those are for temporary, crisis-driven jobs but basically won't exist in 3 months? We've established the Amazon and grocery stores can't get enough people to handle things like curbside delivery.

To ooze this back toward economics, we do have a serious problem with the service sector. Most service sector jobs are low skill, low pay, low benefits positions that require face to face contact. Service employees can file for unemployment, but small service employers have to meet rent and other business expenses. Restaurants will be wiped out, and landlords will take a severe hit. Banks will face a wave of commercial mortgage defaults. The commercial credit sector is already in real trouble. I hope none of you have money in REITs.

Even remote service industries like call centers will shut down. If you have ever worked in one, they are sweatshops, with employees crammed together in the smallest possible space to keep overhead down. Even in normal times they are pest holes, with a third of the staff working on Dayquil and Chloraseptic at any given time. Say goodbye to tech support and call center sales.

Consumer credit defaults will explode, followed by mortgage defaults. Fortunately, after the last recession the banks were required to pass periodic stress testing of their fitness to weather another recession. The financial sector will generally do fine, and not require any government bailouts. <smirk> They will still be crying great crocodile tears, but if they lose money they will still survive.

The majority of the economy is still doing fine. Farmers are still farming, loggers are still logging, truckers are still trucking, and house painters are still painting houses. Specialists will switch from asbestos abatement to virus abatement, wearing the same gear as always. Even Tesla is still making cars, because they use robots. The epidemic will trigger a massive switch to industrial robots, which will result in a steady erosion of manufacturing jobs.

The service sector is not going to reopen any time soon. Neither will professional sports, concerts, plays, or churches. The worst of the epidemic is still a couple months off, and the more people resist self-isolation the bigger it will be and the longer it will last.

Our big hope is testing. If we can ramp up to 100,000 tests a day, we could have 5% of the US population tested once in only 5 months. With that much testing, we could build a statistical model of the epidemic and have a good idea of where the outbreaks are. I have no idea how long it will take to get testing in gear, but if you want to reopen the service sector, that's how.

I'm sure the crisis will still be in full swing in 3 months.

Well you must hate math then because the number of U.S. COVID cases don't match the number of unemployment applications

The number of Americans filing for unemployment is expected to have skyrocketed to a record-breaking 1.64 million for the week ended March 21, according to economists polled by Bloomberg.

The families of the deceased, won't match the millions of unemployed. Simple math, hope those mayors and governors have 2nd jobs lined up come re-election.

California is the 8th biggest economy in the world. They will not open it up until Newsom say's so. Regardless of what Trump says.

Is he planning some kind of attempt to overrule the local public health department's quarantine decisions? How is that going to work? The federal government could order some kind of nationwide quarantine, and even if localities did not want that, they'd have to comply. But I don't see how it would work in reverse.
He (DJT) doesn't have the leadership qualities to declare a "shutdown". If he tries, a lot of people of all types of political persuasions will flip him off.

when Trump says we go back to work, businesses will reopen, if you don't want to go, if you want to stay in your basement, that's between you and your employer. Flip your boss off. See how that works out for ya! lol

Trump's call, do what you're told.....
