It's illegal for an employer to take advantage of a natural disaster by firing people through "layoffs".

The WARN Act applies only to certain employer sizes. Not everybody can afford to splurge on Obozocare and other extraneous benefits and buy gauzy TV advertising. It's kind of a deceptively cost-sensitive world out there for most.

Historically furlough and layoff were used interchangeably. I don't know when that changed.

correct


a furlough is just that a temporary laying-off of non-essential personnel


a layoff is a temporary release of a person..not a firing


they have always been interchangeable
