No you can't, but then what choice do you have? They're the ones with the control needed to mobilize resources to deal with the problem. You just have to hope they don't eff it up too much. (You know for certain they'll eff it up to some degree.)

You have to strike a balance between not going overboard and knowing how much you should personally prepare in case the government does not come through in certain situations. I refer to it as "common sense" prepping. The key is to fact check everything. I do this not just for the government but for my everyday life. It just helps you get ahead in all aspects of life, improves your quality of life, lives you more free time to do things you enjoy and makes life more efficient.

Here is a small "non corona" related example from my life. I'm a fitness buff who eats a protein rich, healthy high calorie diet. By doing proper research (and without coupon clipping) I managed to keep my grocery bill to only $125/month. I also, managed to get my shopping to a point where I can shop for 3 weeks of groceries in one go. So I also freed up a lot of time by not having to shop often.

Thanks for the all the positive comments guys. I'm glad this thread resonated with a lot of you. The more of us that are at least somewhat self reliant; the quicker this country will be able to recover if there is ever a true crisis.

Its interesting that during a national emergency, FEMA has the authority to WITHHOLD and even 'alter' news and information to the public...if it feels it may lead to a mass panic, I think this is why we are seeing the current response actions.

They are giving the public SOME information...but I would bet my paycheck, they are also withholding or altering information too, in an effort to avoid a mass panic, runs on the banks, anarchy in the streets, etc.

Look at it this way...if our govt knew a large asteroid was heading for earth and was going to directly hit us 6 months in the future...does anyone actually believe they would give the public that information 6 months early?!!! OF COURSE NOT (it would create a mass panic), instead they would tell people there is nothing to worry about, its going to miss us, etc....I believe they would wait until the last possible moment to inform the public (probably 24 hours out).
Where you get this information that FEMA can mess with the media? I’m not saying they don’t. But not because they are allowed - that’s not being transparent as the law requires.

Stop trying to qualify yourself to people who may or may not possess critical thinking abilities.

I've found that people who label others who do their own investigating into situations to draw their own conclusions as "conspiracy theorists" are too mentally and intellectually lazy to think for themselves. They are so gullible they will believe anything CNN or ABC or BBC reports as 'news'. They are not very bright people.

You should be proud to be called a 'conspiracy theorist'. It means you are too bright and have too much intelligence to have the wool pulled over your eyes.

I think it's way too generalized to say we can't rely on government, just as it would be to say we should trust government unconditionally with no checks and balances.

It would be like saying "you can't trust neighbors." Well, maybe you can't trust the goofy deadbeat who would steal a pink flamingo out of the yard that's not bolted down. But yet the neighbor on the opposite side of Mr. Deadbeat who offers to shovel snow off his elderly neighbor's stoop might be one to be trusted.

The same idea applies to the government and the level of government that's being evaluated. Government is often a reflection on the people who they are supposed to represent and the ability of how well the people electing them can discern who is good and who is not. It's the classic lawyer answer: "It depends."

I always like to deal with facts and predict the future based on past behavior/common sense. Please read the this whole post for all the factual information I'm about to give. None of this is based on "theories or guesses" on my part. Its all based on irrefutable evidence based on statements our government has made over the past few weeks. This minor pandemic proved beyond doubt (just like most event from history) why the following is almost always true:

I would be interested to hear your take on the above situation.
The following is only my opinion:

I am 2 days older than dirt and learned the following over a lifetime of human involvement.

1) If chicken little says the sky is falling look up with suspicion.
2) If chicken little and 100 scientist says the sky is falling run.......................

During a 'national emergency', they are permitted to take actions they normally would not be allowed to do, its all about protecting public health and safety, and maintaining order and calm.

Before all this started, there was a thread talking about what FEMA can and cannot do in certain situations, their protocols are accessible online, Ive not read all them, because most of it is small legal type print and hard to understand, but there are a few things that stand out, like the authority to withhold and alter news and information.

The asteroid hitting earth scenario I mentioned earlier is a great example...in such a crisis, it would actually be better for the public NOT to know whats coming, the mass panic would be terrible for everyone and just make it that much worse.

In bold.

None with sense trust, strangers, professional liars aka Politicians. It's a quick way to learn about disappointment. Hardliners are in denial about their own on both sides.

The 1 thing you can always depend on is the government finding the most expensive, least efficient method of dealing with anything.
