A single treatment of the drug is said to be able to effect a ∼5000-fold reduction within 48 hours in virus in cell culture:

"We report here that Ivermectin, an FDA-approved anti-parasitic previously shown to have broad-spectrum anti-viral activity in vitro, is an inhibitor of the causative virus (SARS-CoV-2), with a single addition to Vero-hSLAM cells 2 hours post infection with SARS-CoV-2 able to effect ∼5000-fold reduction in viral RNA at 48 h. Ivermectin therefore warrants further investigation for possible benefits in humans."

in vitro, not in vivo

I was working at Merck as an undergrad when they developed that. It was quite a buzz then; only those in ag today know anything about it.

I hear sulfuric acid does a great job too!

In the dish, of course.

I'm hopeful that mitigating compounds will happen - I believe they will.

Interesting. Maybe all the ivermectin I have inadvertently touched and probably ingested over the years will stave off the virus.

Interesting. Chloroquine is also an anti-parasitic. Wonder what the underlying mechanism is that seems to help against a virus.

Well, that would be great if it turns out to be effective but:

"Ivermectin is very widely used and seen as a safe drug. We need to figure out now whether the dosage you can use it at in humans will be effective—that's the next step," said the study's leader Dr. Kylie Wagstaff in a statement.

So, it hasn't even been tried yet on humans with CV. That means it will take months of testing and experimentation before it can be prescribed for actual human patients and that's IF it works.

Lot's of snake oil going around these days.

"inhibits the replication of SARS-CoV-2 in vitro"

In vitro means in a petri dish or test tube.

I could put some COVID 'in vitro', put lighter fluid and a match to it, and claim the same thing. Could I do that inside a human body. Probably not.

Yep. Bleach is also great for disinfecting and kills bacteria and viruses quite well. But heaven help if you try to chug a quart of it in hopes of killing off the coronavirus (or any other virus).

Wow, I hope Trump doesn't say he is optimistic about this to cause the Dems to anyone ever getting this as a treatment.

I hope the same thing, but not for the same reason.

Because if he did, sure as shootin' some fool would say "hey, don't we still have some of that ivermectin laying around that we used on Old Paint?"
