What an idiot, I guarantee he said this all the time in private, he just happened to get caught. It's clear he casually uses it without a thought, and it has nothing to do with listening to and being influenced by rap music as some say.
As far as his punishment goes, before people complain about "PC run amok," NASCAR has always had an image problem so to speak with certain groups. His stupidity obviously doesn't help matters so it was the right thing for them to do.
NASCAR driver Kyle Larson issued an apology Monday after using a racial slur during an iRacing event broadcast that streamed on NASCAR’s website on Sunday night.
Larson was heard saying the n-word during the stream of the virtual race in what seemingly was meant for a private conversation. In the clip of Larson using the slur, someone responds by telling him that he is on a public channel.

I said "fans", not the folks worried about how a media backlash might impact their short-term bottom lines.
He's one of the best young-ish drivers in the sport. Mark my words, Larson doesn't really suffer any long-term impact from this. It helps that the season is suspended now, too, I would imagine.

Kanye has won several Grammys, but I don’t think they were awarded BECAUSE he used the word.

That said, I saw the context in which this driver said it and it’s clear that he wasn’t being racist. In fact, he said it in a way that let’s you know that he got it from listening to rap like most kids his age.

Nobody fired anyone. Suspended indefinitely by CGR and he's a free agent at the end of this season.
Someone will pick him up after the dust on this is all settled - talent trumps everything else.
