A bad flu season does a lot of those people in. We do not shut down every year because of the flu.

This virus is a disguise for 'something else'.
People usually dont die from a virus, they die with a virus. All those people we have on ventilators, are technically dying of ARDS, not COVID-19. But it is COVID-19 that caused them to have ARDS. People that die of a heart attack with COVID-19, are technically dying of myocardial infarction, but it is the COVID-19 that increased their work of breathing to such a point where the heart was not getting enough oxygen to meet it’s needs.
A COVID positive patient who dies in a car accident should not be counted as a COVID-19 death, and no ethical doctor would put that on the death certificate. But if we classified people by their literal “cause of death”, then almost nobody would die from COVID-19.
A test has never been a requirement for “cause of death” but for political reasons, some people here in the states feel like it should be for this particular disease. If your clinical judgement leads you to believe that COVID-19 is what led to the death, then that is what should be written on the death certificate, just like any other disease. That is what the CDC was trying to say.
We have a nursing home here that had 70 deaths within a matter of a few days. It is safe to assume that COVID-19 was the reason.
There is an old “joke” in medicine. When you dont know the actual cause of death, just write “Heart failure”. You will never be wrong, because ultimately, everybody dies of heart failure.
We dont typically write JUST COVID-19 on the death certificate. We write ARDS secondary to COVID-19, or pneumonia secondary to COVID-19, or congestive heart failure secondary to COVID-19, etc.

I am well aware of that. But is it ethical to add "COVID-19" to a death certificate but someone dies of a myocardial infarction or other condition commonly associated with COVID-19, even if COVID-19 was not previously diagnosed or tested for?

Very informative post, thank you. There have been many reports of under-counting of COVID-19 cases and counts:
"In Georgia, cases—and deaths—are only recorded by the state health department if the person has tested positive for the virus. That means that the state’s 687 deaths (as of Sunday afternoon) are likely not accounting for additional deaths that weren’t officially confirmed as coronavirus cases. In Florida, which has among the lowest reported death rates for COVID-19, it’s also likely that officials aren’t counting probable coronavirus deaths. The state’s spike in pneumonia and influenza deaths last month seems to suggest deaths are similarly being vastly underreported."
Of course the states with governors who are very eager to reopen their economies have an incentive to keep the reported numbers down.

Yes, people died during the 2009 H1N1 "pandemic" but those deaths were spread out over 8 months and it is not even as contagious as COVID-19.
A bus, a subway car, a class-room full of people and H1N1 is a nothing burger. Unless they're all sucking face and swapping spit they're not going to get H1N1.

The whole point of the exercise is to prevent hospitals from triaging.
For those who don't understand triage, it's real simple: You 9 people go over there and die quietly, while we try to save this one, because we don't have the resources to treat you.
You know what people are not going to be working if they're sick. And they're going to get sick if they go and open things too early. If they don't want to go to work they risk getting sick and dying and that's going to keep them out of work. I don't know what people don't get about that

It is only overloaded in random locations.
