Reno is at a natural crossroads which makes for warehousing, Vegas not so much. It's a tough one to crack.
With Reno literally halfway between SF and SLC, and having always been kind of a crossroads (Reno is older than Vegas, and alot of silver mining took place near, but not in, Reno), it makes sense. Vegas was literally just a water stop, until gambling was legalized.
I wonder if the order was lifted today, just how full the casino's would be. I know personally that I would probably try and limit time in places like that just for a little while longer. I'm hoping that when things do open up that restaurants for that matter that maybe they'd remove a few tables to still trying and keep some space between people. That seems somewhat logical for now.
I am getting tired of not going out to restaurants and bars and things like that.
Interesting how little people actually know about Las Vegas.
For instance Mrs. Goodman is not the mayor of the strip. She is the mayor of the City of Las Vegas. The downtown casinos which are in the city have around 10% of the income of the strip.
Mrs Goodman is the wife of Oscar Goodman, famous lawyer to the mob figures and prior mayor of Las Vegas. Carolyn's claim to fame is in fact education. She started and was the initial Head Master of the Meadows School. Which is arguably the best school in Las Vegas though it is expensive.
She is also a straight shooter. She may be wrong but she believes what she preaches. And her drive to reopen deals more with the rest of the small businesses rather than just the downtown casinos.
And the Las Vegas visitors are in general not low end. That may have been true 30 or 40 years ago but is no longer operative. The average room rate is around $125. and the average stay is 3.4 days.
Some Las Vegas shows are portable but many are not. They involve complex staging built into the site.
Las Vegas revenue has not been primarily gambling for decades. There are three legs to the revenue - Gaming, lodging and food and entertainment. There is another local revenue source which may well be as big as any of the other three though we do not talk about it. That is sex workers. The casino guys do not want it legalized nor do they want it to go away.
It's not that I don't feel for Vegas - I've traveled a lot there for work (Switch data centers are freakin' awesome), and I like the city vibe a lot. (And that blue light at dusk...) I had so much respect for their attitude after the mass shooting, spent a bit extra of my own money.
But let's get real - the city could hardly be better designed as a disease distribution center. People from all over the place and all walks of life mingling in bars, restaurants, theaters and casinos, then flying back home?
If Las Vegas is on its economic deathbed after six weeks then it must have been a sham city in the first place. Being addicted to tourism or one industry is a recipe for disaster and most places have already figured it out years ago. (Economy: The primary drivers of the Las Vegas economy are tourism, gaming and conventions, which in turn feed the retail and restaurant industries.
wikipedia)
The problem is that everybody (casinos, hotels) will want to open at once.

Conventions are a non-starter for a while yet. There was supposed to be a major networking technology conference in early June, and I can guarantee that even if the city opened, no company is going to send critical members of their workforce off to a crowded convention center.
The only reason I go to Vegas is for the shows... If the casinos close, the shows are over, and many, many people would not want to fly into a desert...
