A top emergency room doctor battling on the frontlines of the coronavirus outbreak in New York City died by suicide over the weekend, her family members have revealed.
Dr. Lorna M. Breen, the medical director of the emergency department at NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, died in Charlottesville, Virginia on Sunday.
In the days leading up to her death, the 48-year-old reportedly recounted to family members a series of traumatic scenes she'd witnessed working in the Manhattan hospital, including an onslaught of patients dying in front of her before they could even be removed from ambulances.
So so sad. I cannot imagine what she was going through mentally. It’s likely that many doctors will need counseling after all they have endured fighting this virus. My heart goes out to her loved ones
she herself became ill with COVID-19, though she went back to work after a week and a half.
They shouldn't have let her go back that fast after being sick. The hospital ship should have been used to treat more patients. It has capacity for 1000 and only had 20.
My condolences to her and her loved ones. War against an invisible enemy with asymptomatic transmission is the cruel twist that we will have to get a handle on as well.
I doubt that the UK Daily Mail has a thorough knowledge of this doctor's other psychological issues.
It just doesn't matter in the long run what her supposed "other" psychological issues might have been.
She was performing her duties under very terrible circumstances and one would like to think upper hospital administration will be there for them as needed with PTSD treatments as required.
She must've had some other issues that had nothing to do with this virus. Time will tell but many doctors see really tragic things. I am sure it scars them but that's what they also signed up for. It is unfortunate for her family and friends however.
If you are human - and your job is to save people - the multitude of people dying all at once has to be crushing - my condolences for the family. I salute her for the lives she did save. RIP-
I wouldn’t not last 2 seconds. Any of you ?
