Even the coronavirus can't halt the bad impact of AB-5 in California.
Open Letter to Suspend California AB-5
Dear Governor Gavin C. Newsom and All Members of the California State Legislature:
In 2019, California Assembly Bill 5 was passed to regulate the use of independent contractors in a variety of activities.
By prohibiting the use of independent contractor drivers, health care professionals, and workers in other critical areas, AB-5 is doing substantial, and avoidable, harm to the very people who now have the fewest resources and the worst alternatives available to them.
We, the undersigned Ph.D. economists and political scientists, call for the immediate suspension of AB-5.
151 signed the letter.
Note this in the background information...
The current situation of voluntary (and mandatory) self-isolation has created an immediate need for flexible and low-cost ways of delivering goods to customers. Other essential needs could also be served by enabling independent contractors currently hindered by AB-5.
"Low-cost" ?? What happened to minimum wages?
With minimum wages as high as they are - there are no low costs. I don't think they saw that coming...
AB-5 unintentionally has pushed all of the risks and all of the costs of a vibrant gig economy onto lower- and middle-income individuals, those who would benefit most from flexibility to work around the restrictive policies.
Sadly this is the case with people who create laws and regulations, but have no idea what they are doing (I assume).
