Once the discussion revolves around health care... suddenly they are socialist. Kinda like CNN which is criticized as fake news is suddenly a credible source if it backs their views....

With that said....

I can definitely see the suicide rate and substance abuse rising during these times. Many are ignoring the fact that the Well Being Trust isn't recommending that the we risk it all and simply open the economy... they are simply raising an awareness that more should be done to support mental health during this time. Similarly, when an organization raises awareness about alcohol abuse, they aren't asking to ban alcohol but rather address the lack of services to assist those that fall into alcoholism.

The article really doesn't back anything up in this thread's premise.

75000 at risk of dying based on projections...

79,696+ are definitely dead and that's not based on projects... but a real death count.

And no..... I'm not for keeping everything closed... quite the opposite. I'm not for being stupid / unsafe. I am glad that some states are opening even though I think some are overly aggressive with their timeline. As long as the we as a society continue to be ornery about social distancing, wearing face masks, etc... we are actually never going to get to a safe opening. Unless consumers feel safe they won't patron the businesses anyways. The extended time we are in a closed economy is our own doing... our attitude regarding social distancing measures and resistance to change/adjustment..... not because of some unfounded fear.

The sooner we as a country take our medicine... the sooner we can open back up.... but like a child, we refuse to take our medicine and throw temper tantrums instead.

I'm referring to other people I've seen posting about their troubles trying to get unemployment.

I haven't had an employer hire me in over ten years now because of my medical problems. I was kicked off disability over a year ago. I'm unemployable. I get chemo to keep my immune system suppressed because of my auto immune disease. I have a lot of health problems though. I'm not allowed to have any income. I already decided that it'd be better to die at home while I still have a place to live than in the streets. If they sign me to a new lease where I am at then the stimulus will pay for rent for the whole year. So, I might get another year to live. They've had the office closed to the public, so I am still waiting to learn if I get another year or not. I can't handle being homeless again, and this time it would be for the rest of my life. With everything shut down, being homeless would be worse than it was the other times. At least the other times I could go use a restroom at Walmart during the night. Now there's not even anywhere to get clean. I'd be forced to live in filth on the streets until I died. There are some things worse than death.

In my circle of friends, I am the only one who remains employed. Each and every one of them qualified for unemployment and is actively receiving assistance.... no one has had problems getting their check. In NJ, the bar to qualify isn't high.... $200 per week earnings for more than 20 weeks or at least $10k over the past year. In fact, those that traditionally wouldn't qualify such as self-employed and freelancers, are now also qualifying for assistance.

I think the issue might be locally to you or whomever you are referring to...

And you think is this a good thing? You do know the extra money of $600 a week is only for three months. Three months go by very quick, so unless your friends are still living with their parents, how do they plan on getting by?

I wouldn't have put that out there about you being the only one employed. Hopefully it stays that way, but you may start to see some resentment from some of your friends who are now out of work.

This isn't going to be a recession. It is a Depression.

Learn the difference. Maybe spend some time watching documentaries on the GD.

You are assuming I said it was a good thing... I did not.

I simply said that some people are not having trouble getting their unemployment .. no more no less.

Everyone I know would rather be working..... just like I'd rather have a discussion with someone who can read and not egg on an unnecessary argument.

PS> I've extended several thousand in loans to my friends to help cover expenses... I know they would do the same if the tables were turned. You have a really odd sense of friendship if you think hiding such matters is a solution to avoid resentment.

And 80,000 have already died from COVID-19 in the US in the past few weeks. That number will likely be 200,000 by the end of the summer. And that is with all the measures taken. As Sweden has demonstrated, even with no measures taken, the economy has largely been devastated by COVID-19.

But I am wondering...tens of thousands of Americans were already dying of overdoses and suicide before this happened and no one seemed to care much about them. In fact, I’m pretty sure some members of this board we’re of the opinion that the overdose deaths were a great way to solve the opioid epidemic. Now, suddenly, everyone has so much empathy for these people. I’m heartened to see it.

The fact is the number of cheeseburger eaters saved far outnumbers the number of increased deaths of dopers and crazies.

Yes but they can also die from a car accident, drowning in their swimming pools, or falling down the stairs, and guns right?

Should we confiscate guns to protect those from suicide?

In a recent poll, 16 percent of respondents—or roughly 40 million American adults—reported that someone they care for attempted or died by suicide with a gun.
