In hearing discourse both nationally and locally (in the midst of a local referendum on mass transit), Republican leaders seem to just hate passenger trains.

They want to defund Amtrak.

They don’t want to fund mass transit.

But even when a passenger train is built with private funds and privately run, such as one called Brightline in Florida, Republican leaders oppose it. And Republican leaders love highways, which are usually paid for with tax dollars. Thus their opposition to passenger trains isn’t necessarily due to them being a government program.

Why do Republican leaders hate passenger trains? It just seems odd to be so antithetical to them, particularly as Adam Smith (a conservative economist from the 1700s who is one of the founders of conservative economics) said that transportation is one of the core roles of government.

Nobody hates passenger trains but some slaves hate how they are forced to pay for the trains. Damn slaves. Who do they think they are?

Because trains are evil socialism, but cars are good rugged individualism.

I don't.

I'm a big rail fan actually and ride/support them every reasonable chance I get.

Have many friends that feel the same way.

Also, my area is pushing for Amtrak to establish a new stop at a nearby town. The surrounding county is 75% Red.

hate passenger trains? hmm, that's news to me. We don't have passenger trains where I live.

I bet your real questions is why do people who don't have passenger trains in their area don't want to pay for passenger trains in your area? So in your mind that equals "hate" them.

Ohio was getting ready to create a high speed train that would have connected Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati. Even had federal funding ready to go for it when Kasuck turned the funding away and stopped it. You ask residents of each of the cities if that thought it was a good project you'll get mostly positive responses...most felt it was the conservative governor punishing the liberal big cities and not allowing a very worthwhile project to go through.

I've been to Japan before. It's awesome how good their rail system is. You can go a distance of like Boston to Washington to DC in only 2-3 hours at a very affordable price. It sure as heck beats driving through horrific traffic. Japan's bullet trains are an absolutely incredible experience, and its baffling how Americans wouldn't demand something similar, but rather waste so much time in the car snarled in traffic. The land area/size excuse doesn't hold water either, because our economy is still larger than China's, yet China's railway blows the US' out of the water and they are rapidly building high speed rail across the entire county. China is also nearly the same size as the US in terms of land area. You also can develop local regional rails, they don't have to initially be connected to start.

There's too much of a NIMBY attitude in the US and too much power given to individuals who can stall major infrastructure projects that'd benefit the entire country. NIMBYs can file lawsuits that costs millions in overrun costs and years worth of delays. For example, in the DC region just a handful of elitist NIMBYs have cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars in overrun, years worth of delays, and are about to kill the whole purple line project to improve the metro. They've sued from everything because the feigned concern about the environment, which requires millions in additional survey studies and wasted years of time, to suing to try to make their bike path and walking trails 'parks' that'd make it basically impossible to build rail. The DC metro area has some of the worst traffic in the country, yet one or two NIMBYs can kill the whole project that'd relieve congestion for millions of people. It's insane. There needs to be a change too so that the individual cannot override the greater good or cause delays that paralyze the projects for basically all of eternity.
